Your experience with hurricane ins. coverage?
Haven't seen an adjustor yet, over three weeks since Ivan.
I have out-of-pocket expenses of $4,000 for debris removal, which I don't think either homeowners' or flood insurance will cover.

I'd like to hear some of your experiences, what was covered and what wasn't.
Thanks,
trof

1. None since I am in Chicago....
But I've been wondering about you. How bad was the damage to your place?

4. Little COVERED damage
5 trees leaning against roof, 4 or 5 shingles damaged.
Aluminum frame screened porch roof panels heavily damaged by tree limbs poking through.
All in all, we came through well.
Pier and dock either gone or broken up. Have coverage, but I'm guessing it doesn't cover WIND damage. Most damage covered by high water and I don't know if that's covered either.

What I have learned: You need a good hurricane to learn about everything your insurance DOESN'T cover.

It's like "This is covered for water damage, but you had wind damage.
That is covered for wind damage, but you had water damage."

8. That's a fair amount of damage....
...but it could have been worse. Happy to hear you are okay.

2. my friend has 2 policies
and my friend was advised she needed a 3rd policy for "wind and rain" damage. Her HD on her computer was blown and the insurance is covering that after a $250 deductible.

Sounds like hell to me - 3 policies needed! She lives in So. Carolina btw.

Best of luck to you.

3. put in your FEMA claim yet?
Edited on Sat Oct-09-04 10:58 AM by gmoney
Not sure of the details, but they are handing out tax dollars to help hurricane victims, and I'd prefer to have my tax dollars at least go to a DUer.

Hope everything else is OK with you and yours.

5. Have a FEMA case file #
But don't think they'll be any help for my debris clearing expenses.

6. There's $12 billion out there somewhere for the hurricane victums.
I heard it will cover getting the electricity back on. Also pay for restocking freezers. Lots of people are interested in that debris removal. One family paid $7500 for a big tree to be removed. Guy brought in a crane and put the tree in the neighbors yard because the home was vacant. Nice move for the effort.

7. My adjuster called a week or so ago...
...and said he'd get to us as soon as he can. He has been personally assigned 130 claims, and he says he's getting the worst ones first. Since I only lost a chimney and several shingles, I'm probably pretty far down the line.

As far as FEMA goes, they are really doing a good job. The key is getting their inspector out to your house. They will see everyone that applies, but you won't get any money until the inspector physically comes by and visits. But 3 days after he visits, check your bank account. If you bought a generator, a chainsaw, or tarp for your roof (and chimney in my case), they cover every penny of it. 3 days after I spoke to the inspector, I had a FEMA deposit in my account for every penny I spent on the above items. I gotta give them credit. After hearing both good and bad things about FEMA in years past, they are really coming through for folks around here. Every person I know whose home was uninhabitable got a check from FEMA for 4 months rent (including deposits)...allowing them to move in a safe place until theirs is repaired.
