I just heard the world's lamest public service announcement on an Atlanta radio station. Sponsored by the GA Dept. of Family and Children Services. It's all about how cool and sexy it is to be ABSTINENT. Lots of voices of sultry teenage girls oohing and aahing over a guy because he's abstinent. One of the voice-over lines even says that abstinence can make you attractive and desirable in ways you'd never imagine.

Only in Georgia. "Maybe if I'm abstinent, I can get laid!"

Unfortunately, to most teenage girls, abstinance doesn't include blowjobs. I swear ta gawd, it sounds like that's what they're talking about when they say "desirable in ways you'd never imagine"

E kills brain cells, E damages the part of your brain that makes you happy... (and no, not the horrid E! channel... they mean Ecstasy, but they're basing their PSA on a report that was cheneyed up.... it's the one where they used Methamphetamine instead of MDMA on the rats....)

Yes, Ecstasy is illegal. Yes, much of it is not safe because it's illegal and the illicit manufacturers can get away with whatever they want. HOWEVER.... meth and MDMA are not the same drug. And yet....

I hate the drug war... it's as useless and misguided as the war on terror.

NIH spread some bad research on LSD in the 60's. Academics are usually aware if research claims in their field are bullshit, though.

so far, at least.

Part of the problem is getting access to pure MDMA. Then there's getting access to volunteers and getting FDA approval for the study.

At this point, I've seen three published studies - one stating brain damage, one stating no measurable damage and one with mixed results. (one in Nature, one in the Journal of Psychiatric Medicine and one at JAMA. That makes me wonder that the studies are flawed somehow or that the drug does not interact the same way in all brains.

Yeah, but what do I know? I'm just a psychologist in the field. Better studies of ALL drugs are needed... (see Vioxx...)

it's a challenge for them. Same ad wouldn't work for girls. An abstinent girl is too much work. How depressing is it for guys that some girls will do all kinds of farm animals but not them?
