Any fans of Stephen King's Dark Tower out there?
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 06:45 PM by Downtown Hound
I just read the seventh and final book in the series. It was well-written. Very well-written in fact. But I'm really torn about the ending. It just left me feeling very unsatisfied. But on the other hand it kind of intrigued me. If you haven't read it, I'm not going to tell you what it is unless you ask. You're better off not knowing. I was wondering what you thought of it, for those of you that have read it.

1. Half way through the last one
and so far, so good. I find the way he's weaving his life and his fiction together very interesting (the self-examination of his own talents and failings as a writer, as well as his sense of obligation to the characters in the series), though I think the concept is more intriguing than the actual writing (which has been wildly uneven throughout). The Tower series is such a huge mix of some of SK's best and some of his worst work-- but the narrative drive has been pretty constant and I'm looking forward to seeing how it wraps up.

4. I know exactly what you're feeling
I felt the same when I was halfway through. Be prepared, it has a very shocking ending.

2. I have read every Stephen King book
except his Dark Tower series. I can tell they need to be read in order - Is it worth my while to start?

the first four books in this series. Brilliant in every way. If you do start, be patient with the first one. It's a little weird. Stephen King wrote it when he was very young, and it shows. The story actually doesn't really start to take off until the second book.

I have enjoyed the last three books, but they have left me conflicted overall. They took such a radical turn that I'm still not sure what to make of them, which is why I posted this thread. And, I can't help but feel a little cheated by the final conclusion in the last book. I just feel that after seven books totaling well over three thousand pages, we deserved more. But, like I said, the first four books are some of the best fantasy I've ever read, and I've read The Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter books. I guess I just haven't made up my mind on the last three yet. But they are intriguing.

5. Worth your while, but DO start at the beginning.
The story grows more intriguing as you move along, but you will need information from earlier stories for later things to make sense.

One of the greater things about this series is that it also envelopes many other King tales. (I mean even more than usual)

Since you are a King reader, you'll enjoy spotting these references.

I haven't gotten hold of this last, final Dark Tower yet, so please NO SPOILERS!

7. I believe King said that it had the same illustrator
as the first book. If I recall correctly. Regardless, the illustrations are excellent.

8. I LOVED the ending of the last book but it did leave me with
some interesting (to me) questions.

I detested how he injected himself into the story in SOS, but I grudgingly accepted it in the last book.

9. Glad you liked it
Really. I really loved this series. I just wanted something more. I don't know. King even points out that people like me are selfish and cruel. Maybe he's right, but I can't help feeling the way I do. I didn't dislike the last book. I actually thought it was one of the best in the series. I just wanted more of a final resolution.
