Thnx for scary movie recommendations--here's what we got:
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 06:52 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
We rented The Tingler, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Gaslight and The Night of the Hunter.

We watched The Tingler today--Vincent Price. Creepy and corny at the same time, just the way I like it. Theory: when you get scared this malevolent creature called a Tingler attaches itself to your spine and the only way to release it is to SCREAM!!!! Best plot twist is how they tested the theory on a deaf-mute woman who obviously COULDN'T scream. She died of it....or did she?

This movie had an unusual color sequence right in the middle AND when it was shown in the movie theaters, they actually rigged up certain chairs to give the person a little electric shock. Can you imagine movie theaters doing that today? Can you say lawsuit?

The Night of the Hunter is Robert Mitchum....I happened to find it at Hollywood Video and apparently it is quite good: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048424/

We're watching that one next, and after reading that IMDb entry, I can't wait.

Gaslight was recommended here last night (I couldn't find the others) and has a 17 year old Angela Lansbury's screen debut!

The Man Who Knew Too Much is James Stewart and Doris Day in a Hitchcock--something I've been meaning to see forever.

Thanks again for the great recommendations! In the same scary vein, I was going to watch the extras on my F 9/11 DVD, but just can't bring myself to. I want scary ESCAPISM right now, and that stuff is just too depressingly real.

Kerry on!

On edit, I wanted to add that The Tingler has what is apparently the first on-film acid trip. Funny stuff. "The walls!!! THE WALLS!!!!"

4. I can't wait for that one
probably tomorrow evening. Letting Little Moonbeam determine order of movies.

There is NOTHING like a good old thriller. Why didn't I discover these years ago??

6. a classic
We saw some of it in film last year and I decided to borrow it for home because I wanted to see all of it. I also enjoyed the Simpsons' subsquent parody of it.

8. that was the first Hitchcock movie I ever saw
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 06:55 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
and I only saw it about a month ago! I am brand new to Hitchcock, believe it or not (and in my 30s).

They were showing it on our PBS channel about a month ago, on a Saturday night, when we usually watch British comedies. We were torked off that there weren't any Britcoms on that night, but we watched just the first five minutes of Rear Window and were COMPLETELY sucked into that movie! Myself, Mr., Little, and my best friend who comes over to watch stuff and play cards with us. I swear we didn't frigging MOVE until that movie was over.

And Grace Kelly......ahhhhhhhhhhh gorgeous!

5. My Fave Scary Movie is "The Thing" by John Carpenter
I got to hang out one night in NYC with one of the stars who was then pretty unknown, Keith David. He was really fabulous (he is alos great in Platoon)as was the whole ensemble cast. It is sci-fi scary - but brilliantly executed.

9. Now that was my favorite when I was around her daughter's age
I was in third grade and I even did a little report on it, I don't think the teacher knew I did a movie report on a John Carpenter movie. Yes, that is a good one, I'd love to see it again.

12. Have you and little M_S ever watched The Lost Boys? The Silver Bullet?
My son and I watched it, and he really liked it. We watched The Silver Bullet, too.

Gary Busey as the drunk uncle in The Silver Bullet--it was pretty good.

Both must be at least 20 years old, but they still give me the startles! :-)

13. I wanted to get The Lost Boys
but we already had four others and Little M wasn't interested in The Lost Boys, so we'll save that for another time. Haven't heard of the Silver Bullet....hmmmmm.

19. Here's a review of The Silver Bullet. (1985)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090021/

The Lost Boys and The Silver Bullet would compliment each other...would make for a fun Saturday night viewing. :-)

14. "Jacob's Ladder"
Also -- "Jacobs Ladder" is REALLY REALLY scary and is brilliantly political and antiwar too.

For breathtaking scariness of a real nature I think "Platoon" is the best war film ever made and incredibly, heartpoundingly scary.

I watched "Dead Calm" the other day (one of Nicole Kidman's early films)) and it is also scary as hell in a demented way.

Panic room (Jody Foster) is also great.

16. It can't involve war
and it has to be ok for a 10 year old to watch. Which rules out pretty much all of those, but you didn't see the original thread, so I'll forgive ya! LOL! (Just kidding!)

I have seen Jacob's Ladder about a million times, VERY VERY good movie. Damn. So good you catch things you didn't notice before EVERY time you see it. Whew. Scary, thought-provoking, AND a tear-jerker.

Platoon I've seen a lot, too. Damn depressing stuff.

15. I remember The Tingler vividly from my childhood.
Scared me silly. Another recommendation would be Blood Simple by the Coen Brothers.

17. It would have scared me more had I been a child watching it
my daughter closed her eyes for a bit, but the corny-ness helped offset the scariness! Could a 10 yr old watch Blood Simple? I love the Coen Brothers!!!

20. Hmm. A 10-year-old probably wouldn't like it.
Mainly because it deals with basic adult issues. There is not a lot of gore - I can just remember one bloody part with a knife. The rest of it is just suspense. If it were me I would just watch it without the kids.

18. If you want a healthy dose of sick humour in your horror
Peter Jackson's debut, "Bad Taste".

FWIW, I'm not a LOTR fan at all.
