It was a book written for families circa 1890. It's hilarious, because it has all those "self abuse" myths about blindness and insanity (no hairy palms, however). My great-grandpa gave it to my mom, because she's a nurse and he lived through those times to see real medical advances (he died in the mid 70s). He thought she'd think it was funny.
I wish I had it in front of me, so I could quote from it. Some of the suggested treatments for things are so wrong. It makes me wonder if you were better off going to a mid-wife in that time than a doctor.
