2. Ditto...not only for his music but also for standing against censorship..
He was one of the few mainstream artists (do they get much more mainstream than him?) to stand up to the PMRC and testify to congress on behalf of artists rights. I'll always remember him standing alongside Frank Zappa and Dee Snider.

Annie's Song and Sunshine on My Shoulder always get to me.

3. His Music Wasn't My Cup of Tea
but it was tolerable. Otherwise, I always thought he seemed like a decent fellow.

We need more people that care as he did for our planet.

6. Were you a teenager when he was first popular?
Because I suspect you'd have gotten sick to death hearing him on the radio ever five minutes back in the day.

Not his fault, I guess. I admire his songwriting craft, but lament his overexposure.

13. I had a roommate who played John Denver LPs incessantly.
'Round the clock.

You'll forgive me if I'm not dashing to the TV remote right now.

11. John is Cool. I always like the fact that he was...
...an honest performer. He came out and did his thing and if you dug it, Great.
..So unlike so many "Acts" nowadays that jump all over the stage, scream and yell and through it all...ain't truly saying shit....
As Dave Brubeck once said "They Whimper at 5000 Watts" (I love that line!)

17. Yes.... His music was simple yet profound..... he sang from his heart...
I love camping out and playing music around the campfire. Laughing and drinking... playing music around a fire.... J.D. music is perfect for this.

14. First Song I ever heard from John Denver .....
Early 70's on KNAC in So Cal ....

WRitten by someone named (John?) Danoff ....

Readjustment Blues

Just out of the infantry this morning, I had to pay my dues across the sea.
No one back in boot camp ever warned me
what the readjustment blues would do to me.
"Welcome to Havannah", said the pilot.
“We must have made a wrong turn on the way.
Let's buy some cigars and keep it quiet,
if they don't know we're here we'll get away."

Just as I had realized he was joking, I saw we were in Washington D.C.
'Cause there was all the patriotic buildings, just like I had seen them on TV.
It must have been a holiday, 'cause there was this parade.
People carried signs, I couldn't read, that they had made
'Till I got closer and my heart fell to my socks,
there was a battle raging and the air was filled with teargas and rocks.
There was the flag I'd fought against so often,
the one I fought for hanging upside down.
The wind was blowing hard, the dirt was flying,
it made the city sky look dark and brown.

I saw a girl, she could have been my sister,
except her hair was long and in her face.
She explained this was a demonstration against the war and for the human race.
Now, I've seen a lot of strange things in my travels. Cannibals, yes, and aliens galore.
But I never thought I'd see so many people saying we don't want your war!
The troops all had on uniforms just like the one I'd worn,
but they were all domestic and my duty chose war.
They carried guns just like the ones across the sea,
except this time, I was the citizen, and they were pointing their guns at me.
Yes, I was just a citizen, and I was walking down the street,
And it was just that night, the readjustment blues got through to me.

22. Like so many of us.... music brings an associated memory of the time...
Most of us have at least one really positive memory associated with a song of his.

16. Lie there by the fire, and watch the evening tire
While all my friends and my old lady
sit and pass the pipe around

And talk of
Poems and prayers and promises
and things that we believe in.
How good it is to love someone,
How right it is to care.
How long its been since yesterday,
What about tomorrow?
What about our dreams and all the memories we share?

My favorite. I havent heard it in years, so forgive me if I messed up any of the words.

23. His music captured the essence of an amazing era.... the late sixties
and early seventies. One of many great songwriters from that time period.

25. I liked him too. Not ashamed to admit it at all. He was a good guy,
I don't remember him being political but doesn't matter. I never got around to looking up the NTSB report on his crash. He didn't seem the type to be a reckless pilot (like me) :D

28. Unfortuately he didn't fill both tanks in his plane
The switch to control which tank used was in back of him. They concluded that he lost his balance when he had to reach in back of him and then the plane lost control. I've loved his music since I was 7 years old. Windsong was my first record. Saw him over 20 times over the years and even met him backstage once. Honest, sincere gentleman.
Truly do miss him. The world needs him now.

29. Some People Are Intimidated By Beauty, I Think
that might be part of why Denver is disparaged.

Sort of like the Carpenters.

Not EVERYTHING has to have an "edge".
