9. Dude! Mine was a '63 MG Midget
Spoked wheels, dual Weber side-draft carbs I had to sync with an orange juice can and a float, and positive ground electrics.

When I first installed an 8-Track (okay...now I've dated myself), I forgot about this, and it ran backwards eating an Aerosmith tape.

A "boat" is what we used to call this large sedan.
Lasted over 150,000 miles before it died.

I had a bumper sticker on the front that read:
"Gas, Grass or Ass, no one rides for free"

And the back bumper sticker read:
"I brake for hallucinations"

I bought it for $50.00 and after 6 cans of "Bondo" and a new radiator,it ran like a top till after I sold it 6 months later for $50.00. This was the luxury model with power everything and push button transmission. Even the clock worked.
I ended up selling it to my best friend. He was broke and needed cheap transportation, and he proceeded to beat on it until the tranny blew. Then he wanted his $$$ back. Hell it even passed NH inspection!
Sorry Jimbo!

20. '73 Chevy Vega
After driving my dad's '65 Bel-Air station wagon (my brothers and I referrred to it as the Shit Wagon) for several years, I bought a brand new '73 Chevy Vega hatchback. 3-speed manual stick shift, black vinyl interior, NO AIR CONDITIONING (think: black vinyl, hot sun, no A/C, fried butt and thighs, etc.). I never had any trouble with it, although many people did because of the aluminum block engine. I loved it. I remember gas being $0.26 a gallon; I could fill up and drive for a week or so on $5.00.

The engine is laughably dinky, my Fiat parts shop guy says a strong person can lift it with his hands. I wonder what other engines you could shoehorn in there?

30. 1966 Mercedes-Benz 250S, previously owned by a shrink!
American cars of the late '60s had quiet rides, but my old Benz was LOUD inside! It only had one thin layer of carpet over hard rubber, then cold steel. To my mind, it was *not* a luxury car.

The guy who sold it to me said it had been driven by a doctor, and I thought, Yeah, yeah, right.

A few months later, I was cleaning the trunk, and under the mat I found a piece of memo paper that read, "From the desk of Xxxxxx Xxxxxx, M.D." I looked up the name in the phone book, and he was listed as a shrink!!!

I always had this fantasy of making an appointment with him, and telling him of a recurring dream, one involving a 1966 beige MBZ with the license plate XXX-XXX.

It was a really cool car, and had some soul. I drove it for another 14 years. Toward the end, repairs were hot and heavy and pricey.

Bought an '87 Volvo 240 DL after that, and drove it for 16 years. Have, and will, stick with Volvo from now on.

Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 10:59 PM by JohnyCanuck
When I grew up in Barbados in the 60's and 70's we had lots of British cars. The first family car I can remember from when I was about 5 years old (about 1959) was a Hillman Minx. I can still remember the day we took delivery of it from the dealer. We were waiting at my Grandparent's house and someone from the dealer drove it over and handed over the keys. It was two tone brown on the bottom half and white on top. God that takes me back. sometime in the late 60's we traded it in for another Hillman Minx and then after that Minx kicked the bucket it was Japanese cars all the way. Toyotas and Mitsubishis.

baby-shit brown, tan vinyl roof, more rust than the Titanic. Four cylinder, automatic, so it was E-X-T-R-A S-L-O-W. Almost large enough for two small adults in the front and a picture of the family dog in the back. Burned oil like crazy, ate batteries like a monster, and rattled, knocked, and clanked like a possessed popcorn machine.

I bumped it into a parked car, bent the hood, and the insurance company totalled it.
