20. I believe there was much Austrian Nazi agitation |
|
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 10:52 PM by FDRrocks
and coercion involved. I may be wrong, ever since I started college I haven't touch my copy of "Rise and Fall...".
Hi, John :)
on edit: I think the head of the Austrian state was either threatened, or was nearly killed, by domestic Nazis who were coordinating thier actions with Berlin.

The name Seyss-Inquart rings a bell. Didn't he basically act as unofficial Nazi ambassador to Berlin, and I seem to remember something about him fumbling the ball for the Nazis at some point. And that name also makes me suspect that Austria was coerced.
College eats brain cells, go figure. :)

23. Seyes--Inquart became like the ruler of Austria |
|
like Hans Frank became of the Netherlands. I dunno if the Austrians were coerced or not but many Austrians were at Nuremburg, I wish I still had my Nuremburg database that I made as a Sopohomore, it was tight :D.

24. At least you're learning to embrace education at an early age |
|
:)
I wish I hadn't wasted my potential in high school. You're going places, kleebert!
Yea Seiss-Inquart did become ruler, in at least an unofficial way, in Austria, I remember that. I'm pretty sure the Austrian Nazi Party tried to kill the sitting leader, who in turn evacuated and was subsequently invited to a private meeting with Hitler in a castle in Germany who basically used the clout of his forces to coerce him signing over the government. If I am wrong, I still know that he did that to at least two other countries, the big castle private intimidation shit, but I think the second attempt didn't go as well.
I feel like I'm learning via the Socratic Method lol.

26. Yea I'm like 200 pages from the end, |
|
but college has me reading far more than I'm used too. I'm reading about the Revolutionary War right now and some of the events of that and the ensuuing mini-world war that followed go into a huge grey area with what I've read about early-20th century German and Russia.
But a good way to remember that Hitler was bent on taking Austria (with his soon-to-be-proven tactic of pacifying the Brits) is that he rather openly referred to his believe in "Anschluss" (sp?), a reunification of Austria and Germany. I'm not even sure if he used his liebensraum argument to gain the support of the populace, although I wouldn't be suprised, can't suffer and loose ends in such a compicated global political climite.

Bhutan is an absolutely worthless little kingdom in the middle of nowhere in Asia. Frankly, if it got conquered, it would take the rest of the world three weeks to find out.

He did Austria and Czechoslovakia. Then the Nazis (and 2 weeks later the Soviets) invaded Poland. Hitler invaded Denmark and Norway in April 1940, followed by France and the low countries in May.

The Poles had alot of deals with Hitler in the thirties. Just like the Soviets, they aided and abetted Hitler until they were turned on.
The Hungarians were actually a full blown axis ally, with hundreds of thousands of troops in the USSR. Hitler took them over too, in 1944, and destroyed their Jewish population. Although Hungary was an axis ally, they balked at turning over Hungarian Jews to the nazis.
