3. Around here the banks are all closed
And I work in a major metropolitan area in a blue state on the east coast, with approximately a dozen banks closer to me than even the nearest McDonald's.

My dad, who's almost as cynical as I am, says that Columbus Day is only celebrated in states with strong and politically powerful Italian-American constituencies-- as opposed to Lake Wobegon-type areas whose Scandinavian-derived populations believe that Lief Erikson was here first :-)
