As long as they can't reach any mirrors. Cats revel in their innate coolness, you know. :D

3. My niece shaves her cat |
|
at the beginning of every summer. He's a long-haired orange tabby and seems to enjoy the cooling effect.

6. The one on the right has a lion cut |

We had to do that to our cat because her fur would knot around twigs on her nightly hunts. She hated it.

She has long persian type fur, and she's so "portly" that she cannot wash very well. When she gets really tangled, we just shave the gray hair off. For some reason the white underbelly and leg fur does not tangle..
She actually likes being smooth..

9. These poor kitties don't look very happy to me! |

I used to comb my long-haired angel, Rhiannon (who hated it!), but prefer to leave mine au natural!:-(

10. I would think it would be comfortable |

as long as it wasn't shaved too close...especially if it's hot.
Still, I don't think I'd shave mine. I'm sure their dignity would seriously suffer.

So yeah, that coat probably gets pretty hot in the summer. I remember when I was a kid, before I ever encountered air conditioning, seeing cats sit around and pant like they were out of breath. That's the only way they have to cool themselves, though.

13. Cats, as a rule, don't like to be messed with since they naturally |

groom themselves. Rhiannon absolutely hated being combed, though she would put up with almost anything else. When she became ill, I was taking her for acupuncture and she would just fall asleep, I kid you not, but she hated grooming. Also, I would think these guys would itch when it grew out. And then there's the dignity issue. You are right. Even some dogs get embarrassed...
