What brought you to DU?
For me it was a progressive websites link in the Nation that featured the Top Ten.

The rest, as they say, is history.

45. why did Salon chop up mediawhores?
I forget how I came across mediawhores, but I thought they were great. What was Salon's complaint?

PS, can't remember how I found DU, but it was Top Ten that first pulled me in. I was impressed with the wit (heh heh ) and especially with the links to all sources. Just give me the truth! All I wan't is the truth!

but I think their main gripe was that MWO was an anonymous site. But it wasn't just a mild rebuke, though. As I recall, salon really raked the horse over the coals. It's still puzzling to me.

I've kinda grown up politically, or at least grown a bit impatient about the overuse of the term "whore", which (1) get applied to anyone who observes anything critical about Democrats and (2) tends to malign actual prostitutes by comparing them to Fox reporters.

84. nuxvomica introduced me to DU
Edited on Mon Oct-11-04 11:29 PM by Rhiannon12866
I already knew him. I was never very politically aware until after 9/11 hit. I was scared witless. That's when I realized how little I actually knew and that I had better find out what's really going on and why. I have learned so much from DU and my newsletters and articles and books. And I haven't liked most of what I've found out one little bit. Then I, in turn, introduced both of his sisters to DU.

on edit: Yes, John, I did have a nice birthday, thanks. And your birthday thread was a big part of it, so thank you again! It's never fun being reminded that you're another year older, but it was worth it, this time, because I was also reminded what lovely friends I have, many of them on DU!:grouphug:

94. I had a dentist appointment on 9/11
I am not a morning person, so I was running late, as usual. I knew that something really terrible had happened, but didn't know the details. I finally saw the details, held hostage in the dentist chair, watching that second plane hit the North Tower, over and over. By the time that I walked out of there, into the warm September sun, since it really was a lovely day, here in New York, I was scared witless and could barely stand! I stopped, on my way home, to vote in the NY primary. The school where I vote was deserted. I vowed, then, to find out what was really going on. I have learned so much, mainly due to DU and friends like you, but certainly haven't been reassured by what I have learned. We have to win this one, John, or this country is in real trouble. We're already in real trouble, but we stand a chance with Kerry. I just don't envy him the job that he has in front of him, dealing with this horrible mess, left by Bush*, that he's going to have to confront and clean up.:-(

I don't even remember which one now. I've always felt along similar lines politically, but was more low key about it for a lot of years as far as actively seeking information (probably 9/11 and the presidential selection of 2000 lit a fire under me again). I lurked for about 3 months before I even signed up. Signed up originally in Nov. of 2002 and then changed to my current name in March of 2004.

I was desperate to find out if there were really any others that felt as strongly about the * residency as I did. I was getting tired of being told at home that I was taking things too seriously, and that I was obsessive about it. I tried the link from BC and found friends! Of course, the others in the family think that the rest of you are all nuts too! But that's OK, 'cause we're doing the divorce thing in the near future.

Specifically, discussion about this story:

Ashcroft Flying High

In addition, I really liked the fact that this site was more "general progressive" than "Democratic Party", or at least was open and welcoming to progressives of all pursuasions. I stayed because of the depth of those discussions, the quality of the 9/11 research here (excluding the crazy fringe stuff) and the fact that DU has the best LBN forum anywhere :)

I'd googled something Mike Moore related and ended up in the freerepublic forums - very weird place for an Australian leftie to find herself in - they were all banging on about boycotting everyone that had anything to do with Moore and generally speaking a lot of shit - had a wee look around and noticed how much DU got mentioned and came over.

Freepville has some uses.

64. I'm trying to pretend it didn't happen
Howard was never gonna lose this election unfortunately - the ALP didn't differentiate themselves enough and I think most people figured that if the two parties are that similar might as well go for the devil they know.

Scarily he know looks like getting control of the Senate or at best will have to rely on the support of our first fundie freaks in Federal Parliament...Family First have tried to hide their real agenda but here's an older quote from their #2 senate candidate in Vic, Danny Nalliah...

"Spot Satan's strongholds in the areas you are living in (brothels, gambling places, bottle shops, mosque, temples-Freemason/Buddhist/ Hindu etc, witchcraft),"

oh god now I need another drink...

I thought you guys were a country of hellraisers who loved every minute of it.

Don't tell me that we yanks are responsible for this.

67. can't really blame you lot
FF knew fine well that if they'd come out and openly declared their associate with the AOG fundies then they'd have received even less of the vote than they did - Australia is for the most part agnostic if not atheist and even the religiously inclined tend to be pretty easy going about it.

FF have mainly got the seat(s) they have because the ALP and the Democrats preferenced them ahead of the Greens in a fit of pique, just one more reason to never forgive the ALP or the Dem's.

77. Mark Crispin Miller
I went to see his frighteningly informative theatre piece at New York Theatre Workshop entitled "Patriot Act" (for any NYers of NJers or future visitors it is going to be remounted at the Zipper Theatre) and afterward he handed out fliers with a list of websites for more info on the Regime... I've been averaging about 5 hours of sleep a night since joining. I'm a junkie.

82. 9/11

Something just wasn't sitting right with me about 9/11. I started following links that popped up on the 'net and found a site maintained by one Paul Thompson. I followed a link from there to a DU thread.

And I was hooked from that point forward.

93. New to the internets....
I was jawing away on some generic bulletin board about politics when some Repug types all declared that they were going to move over to, you know, freeperville...then one of them posted that he was sure all of the rest of us would be heading to Democraticunderground.
So I came over here, read each and every posting that night...sighed in relief and cheered with joy, joined and donated.

Political rhetoric on that site/boards was pure trash that stunk to high heaven... real idiots took over the best boards and ruined them. So, here I am where there is at least SOME semblance of intelligence.
