I hate college.
If I had known it would suck this bad I wouldn't have gone. It is supposedly so important but look at Michael Moore, he didn't go through this shit and it didn't stop him from becoming one of the most successful people in the world. Hell look at Rush, he's a drop-out and now he gets paid millions to just sit on his ass all day making shit up and talking to himself. And don't even tell me Bush got anything out of going to Yale. I hate college.

7. everything
And it doesn't help that it is so conservative here. Every class I go to I have to hear about how Bush is so great and Democrats are evil... anytime I wear a Kerry t-shirt or button people start yelling at me or won't acknowledge me. I never used to hate conservatives but now I really do.

18. Is there a chapter of Peace And Justice Coalition at UAH?
I went to a couple of meetings years ago at UA, but it was too lefty for me. It seemed to be all about gay rights and abortion. I'm for gay rights and abortion rights, but I didn't really feel that welcome, because I don't like to have sex with men, and I don't have a uterus. ;)

I'm not sure if it's a campus organization or not, and it's affiliated with ANSWER, so I would approach it with caution. But you might want to check it out. Up to you. :)

35. ugghhh...I hated UAH too....
went there in the 80s.

For the most part the only really first-rate classes are post-graduate and in tech fields. Not that there haven't been some good humanities professors, but mostly UAH sucks.

There's no university experience there. I don't think even a couple of decades has managed to change that.

Huntsville tends to suck too.

32. You should go to my school
Humboldt State University in Northern CA. Here, the people that like Bush have no friends, we grow the best weed in the country, and people like Michael Moore come to speak to us. That's how I became aware of him. I didn't even know who he was until he came here in 2001 promoting Stupid White Men. I've also seen Woody Harrelson, Amy Goodman, and Spike Lee.

Humboldt kicks ass.

5. Aw, hang in there. :)
I was feeling the same thing earlier. I'm back in class after 7 years off to finish up my Master's. It's quite an ...experience. :)

But, seriously, I was also, due to a project I have to do, just realizing how much college opened my mind. I mean, seriously. It's made me such a reflective person, if nothing else. At least I notice things. :)

11. The cool thing about college
is that it's so diverse in terms of academic fields of study. Maybe you just don't like your major? Drop it like a hot rock and take courses that you think might appeal to you. If you're doing business or accounting or some other godawful suit-and-tie training program, switch to arts, where you'll be challenged to think for yourself. Don't give up just because it's not what you expected; switch tracks instead. You'll find your niche.

19. how about changing schools? I did that and am SOOOO glad I did.
I started at a school that had a a stifling atmosphere and decided after soph year I couldn't handle it any more. So I switched to a school with a more enlightened, loose academic atmosphere. Both schools rated up equally if you look at those rating organizations.

I remember this one guy who was not a jock and went to Notre Dame and he totally hated it. He switched schools and flourished.

Get out of that place if you can't stand it.

it out for that time. Keep us posted and try to stay in school. Switching schools for me was a breath of fresh air (and I still finished in three and a half years).

Good luck!

If so, it's like starting a new job, it takes a little while to get used to. Believe me, no matter how bad it might seem, going at it without having gone to college would be much worse.

it's just that I never liked school at all, I hate the whole classroom atmosphere, and I was all excited about going because I thought I'd finally meet more than a few liberals... WRONG!!

plus, most of my professors are conservative and constantly try and shove bush doctrine down my throat...

that de-emphasizes the typical classroom experience, such as Evergreen State in Olympia, Washington.

Them:

Anyway, you get the idea. It sucked, but I got through it. As a woman, you need an advanced degree in order to be competive. Again, don't be discouraged, you've got all of us to get you through and a new administration coming up! I'll pm you tomorrow. Consider yourself hugged and tucked into bed! Good night, love.

21. Try to find out if UAH offers any "study abroad" programs
My brother was about to get a free ride from Illinois' College of Engineering to study in Germany for a year. He was unable to do it, though, because he wouldn't be able to finish the language requirements (their classes are taught in German, obviously) in time.

Hang in there... there HAVE to be some friendly liberals out there at UAH who thought they were in the same situation you say you're in. :hi:

29. UAH ...

UAH has a strong liberal sub-culture. You just need to seek it out.

I friend of mine once taught there ... he left a couple years ago ... he was a very liberal professor and had friends in the faculty who were also. They sponsored some organizations, so I know they're out there.

Don't give up. Something you're never told in high schools is that a part of what college does is teach you how to deal with the world, i.e. deal with idiots.

33. your right a lot of people got to high places without college -
and you can do the same thing

but you could use this semester as a practice semester and a staging area

finishing things is important skill to have no matter where you are in your life

so you are half way though the semester and you know you probably will move on to some where or some place else

so finish the courses - you paid your money - you don't know the outcome until you finish -

some times I have to use a lot of self talk to finish a course - especially if I am slugging my way through it because I am bored to death

so once your finish the semester and the courses - you will have grades and can transfer them to another college at another time when and if you are ready -

you will still learn something

big part of life is showing up

for the rest of this semester show up for class, homework, and assignments while you make plans for what you want to do in the future

even taking a year off and doing some job somewhere might give you perspective -

using the rest of the semester to research and line yourself up with a job or the next phase of your life is a good staging practice

this is just practice for real life - so enjoy it and do well - then leave -

it is ok to hate college
it is ok to quit after you finish the semester
it is ok to do something else
it is not ok to waste your money by quitting now

show up
plan
research
enjoy the time you do have there
take care of yourself

34. I went to Ole Miss..
and was in a fairly conservative dorm for my freshman year. Me and two other guys on our floor were Clintonites; the rest of the floor wanted Dole to win. I remember being so joyous on that night. Standing outside of my dorm building with a few other liberals, smoking my cigar.. good times.

Are you a freshman? I find that as time goes by, you'll find more and more Lefties. Give it some time.. I started meeting more liberals in my second year..

37. Take the classes you MUST have, study hard, make ONE good friend
and transfer to a different college as soon as you can :)

Even if you NEVER "use your college degree", it opens doors, and hanging out with people you do not agree with, can work to your advantage later..:)

I am assuming that you are a very young person.. ENJOY the next few years..They will probably be the last truly carefree years of your life.. I am not saying that to be a "downer"..it's just TRUE..

Once you are truly "out on your own", you will never have the freedom that you have now..

Try the non-confrontational route ...explore subjects that might lead you to people like yourself.. Courses that tend to be "earth-friendly" are very likely to lead you to people you might like :)

Don't give up..:)
