Scott Limbrecht of Carroll learned the legal definition of "motor vehicle" the hard way.
Now he vows to challenge that definition in court.
Limbrecht, 44, was handcuffed and arrested last month as he drove his riding lawn mower home from the gas station.
His driver's license had been revoked, and the mower was on the street.
"I couldn't believe it," he said. "Top speed is 5 mph. I just drove a block and a half to a convenience store to get some gas."
Most of the trip was on a sidewalk, he said. But when the mower hit the street, a Carroll police officer showed up.
Carroll Police Capt. Mark Heino said the officer knew Limbrecht lacked a valid license.
"That's a serious misdemeanor," Heino said. "And those arrested on serious misdemeanors are generally brought in and booked."
Limbrecht, a plumber, said his license had been suspended for drunken driving and revoked after he was stopped for speeding while driving on a work permit.
Limbrecht rattled off a number of crimes Friday that he considers more heinous than driving a riding lawn mower in broad daylight. He accused police of going for an easy bust.
