8. Are you talking about something along these lines
http://www.abspc.com/app/Series.asp?familyno=10&series=46

these are custom-built

but if you want something from a mainstream maker, I would go with Dell.

7. Too expensive?

There's no reason you can't build yourself a PC better than a equivalently priced Dell.

However, if it's just not your thing, that's another story.

Here's a good system guide for an under $800 PC with plenty of power.

6. I'd take an Emachine over a Dell
I've had both within the past 3 years, and I preferred the Emachine.

I spent 1500 dollars for a similarly equipped Dell last year.

9. Dell or HP/Compaq.
I've had 3 Compaqs and 1 Dell recently. I think you get the most bang for the buck with Compaqs and I haven't had any trouble with mine. Plus, Compaq offers AMD processers, which I don't think Dell does.

17. DO NOT buy an of the shelf computer..!!!!! they are cheaper if you go to
www.cpusolutions.com and have one put together, you can use your present hardware like CD/DVD player/RW, 3.5 floppy.. maybe the power unit.. and fans.

the off the shelf puters CAN NOT BE UPGRADED..or usually fixed.

you can build one on the web site and it will tell you how much it will cost.. they assemble it and test it and send it to you.
they will also help you with what you need to get... at www.pcmech.com you can talk to real computer nerds and gather info on what you actually need for what you use it for. these things have more spiffy stuff than hot rod cars... You probably don't want to 'over clock', but you can get a unit that later you can just add on some new parts and really improve performance UNLIKE the FUCKING CRAP i bought..Compaq/HuletPackerd piece of SHIT. i got 2.6 MHz, and 256Mb and i have to delete the files and history every 10 minutes to keep it working. you can get a new XP program without all the commercials.. i start up with over 40 processes running that eat all the virtual .. to wont keep my mail address for 4 days in a row or my printer connected...

Check it out ..ATHLON .. they have stuff that is so powerful that they have liquid cooling units that keep them within 7* of ambient..

this stuff is really FAR OUT !! and repairable/upgradeable... talk to the nerds on the chat site at www.pcmech.com
