8. No kidding...
Don't you just hate it when those stupid macheads go on and on about how much more money they make because they don't have to spend so much extra money and time on trying to get their PCs to work or that they never feel like tossing their computer out the window because they don't have to deal with Microsoft's products or that they can do their work in half the time because their stupid operating system is so much better and easier to use than Windows or that sure they have a PC, but it just sits in the corner collecting viruses while they can actually get their work done so they can spend more time relaxing or going out or whatever because their stupid macs let them get their job done as opposed to them having to spend so much time downloading new drivers, or reconfiguring things or or or.... oooh, it just makes me so mad!

12. Stupid Macs
are so freaking good that they have ruined me for the PC / Windows side.
When I have to use a windows workstation I feel like I am maroned on a PC isle where everything is lame and cumbersome by comparason... and there are these PC witchdoctors with taboos and charms I have to put up with....

But Gateways are the worst of a troublesome breed of ' puters.

3. A mac need not be expensive.
You can get a really decent Mac for much less than you might think; Especially if you compare it to a PC with the same performance and peripherals.

4. I adore your tender, innocent belief
that you will have no more trouble because you no longer have a Gateway.

What were your Gateway problems, btw? I now have a used Gateway PIII. It is my first Gateway and I must assure you, ALL my five or so previous pcs had problems too.

5. Gateways are like the PC version of a car with a bent frame
It'll never work right.

10. Not since the guy from EMachines bought them out...
He's redesigned and fixed their problems from what I understand. I think the crappy gateway thing is a myth anyway. I only had on problem with mine and I caused it.

14. He may have, but I'll never find out
because I don't touch or offer to fix gateways anymore. They've used the cheapest possible components possible for years. They used to be great machines, I pounded the hell out of a P90 with 24 MB Ram with NT4 + Oracle 7, and it worked great *slow, but solid*.

Ever since the PIIIs came out, they declined fast.

If they catch back up, great, but I build my own now anyway

18. Cheap components.
Plasticy motherboards, underpowered power supplies, cheap/slow/loud system and cpu fans, poor cabling, complete disregard for airflow within the case, not much thought to user-expansion, poorly written BIOS, etc etc

6. my gateway always managed to fix itself if i let it alone for a few days.
i loved it. it baffled everyone, the "give it some space" approach to computer repairs.

9. MINE TOO!!
It's funny. I had mine for FIVE YEARS. I just got a new toshiba laptop back in August, which I love, but I kinda miss that big piece machinery sitting on my desktop waiting for me to turn it on. It was always happy to see me.
And I think she's mad at me. She sits off all the time at my mom's now.

7. Or...
Rip out the motherboard and replace it with something that's not rubbish. This works wonders. :D

15. Is that it? Cheap scummy motherboard?
I was floored by the branded memory. Is everything in this pc branded? I put in my own modem but it crashes incessantly. Wouldn't even turn on with the video card I tried to move over from my elderly PII.

17. My wife bought a Gateway a while back
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 07:58 PM by qnr
It was pretty bad. I built myself a new computer, so I gave her the old 256M RAM in addition to the 32M she had. Seemed to help quite a bit with her problems. Since she has pretty much taken over the laptop, I eventually wiped Windows and put Linux (Source Mage, of course) on it. It had an uptime of 172 days when I finally took it down and reinstalled Windows 98SE on it for a yard sale.

Edit: typo

19. I have the use of a Gateway Profile 4
I have learned all sorts of tricks-they're called workarounds, I believe.

I am so lucky to have gotten this box with it's li'l XP Pro on it! It is soooooooooo fucking unstable, Firefox will freak out on it from time to time. It HATES Zone Alarm, and AOHell pisses all over it. But if it had worked okay, I would not have had all that hands on sorta OJT in IT, or whatever the fuck it is called.

Plus last Christmas Day, while I reformatted 2x, due to a bad prompt ("press any key to continue"-apparently there is a time when you are NOT supposed to do that-even though it says to). And the HOURS I'll NEVER GET BACK spent on hold listening to that chirpy biatch 'Jennifer' and that fucking song 'Oppenheimer'-interesting choice, because I have nearly gone batshit nuclear by the time some who is going to tell me, “Um-I don’t know”

But the Profile 4 is one bad-assedly beautiful machine. I cried myself to sleep when they took it away and brought me another. I made them bring it me back.

It’s like being in love with an extremely handsome man who is a total bastard.
