OMG...My Dad just told me that he's voting a straight Democratic ticket |

We laughed about how different our politics were four years ago. He's been a life-long Republican and he lives in Texas.

For all that we dems do and speak about it's the Republicans who need to make * a point with their party. When Repukes know that they will lose by association then we will have hope that this division in our country can end and we can be Americans again that have different ways of doing things but all want the best for our nation.

he is still at the tune out stage, when information contradicts his world view. *sigh* He has four sons and the oldest will be draft age in two and a half years. But the idea that the war this lunatic is waging, and the multiple wars that seem immenent given the rhetoric of his core advisors... runs right over the top of his head.

the rhetoric per Iran is very recognizable to that used about Iraq (except that it is more 'real' than it was against Iraq). I don't think I even have to push the lie angle - but instead the spread to thin angle - and the doesn't it sound like they are starting the precursor to the next battleground... then asking how the heck can they man such a thing? That might get him to thinking. Ironically (or not) he is toughter to get to think (he converted from a democrat - but he was always a dem as a "my parents were democrats" level)... than it is to get his moderate, republican (also a doctor) wife. I'll try this angle - thanks.

For more than two years, even on DU, folks want to supress "draft" talk. As in "it will never happen..."
BUT
There is a real "cost" to this foreign policy and it is the one you ask... how WILL we man (sic) it?
Hell, this is why we couldn't continue to do real work in Afghanistan *subliminal - the real potential heart of those who attacked us* - when the powers to be decided that Iraq was the real target. We couldn't fully staff each effort. Had to strip one to do the other.
on edit: my point - is that the DRAFT has to be a part of the policy discussion before the fact... whether or not we have the personnel should be a part of the discussion.. in the sense of... is this effort a high enough priority to draft our children to pursue? If not, then why are we pursuing it?

btw, if you could a favor... my time is quite sporadic these days... more than limited and taxed (though since I finally got a cable modem in my "second home" it is a little better.) Please pass along my love to our dearest friend... and let her know that the silence has been more to do with 80 hour weeks trying to calibrate my project from reality to vision (and we still have a ways to go, but we are making progreass) than anything else. Life may be crazy - but it is always worth it. Be it working to right the craziness in our national discourse... or to work to right the wrongs through our crazy professional lives. Thanks.

that he's voting for Kerry this year! He's more of the Rockefeller Republican kind, and startled me this year when the gay marriages started happening in Massachussetts by telling me that he supported gay marriages. I wonder if that was his way of telling me that he knows about me?

My thirteen year old half-sister knows that I'm bisexual, and she's okay with it. She's always known I was bi ever since she was 5. I explained it to her that I liked girls the same way like I liked boys, and she was okay with that. I wish she'd stop asking me if I've found a new girlfriend at my college! :-P
As for my dad....I haven't come out to him. I think I'll probably come out to him after I finish college this year. I'm still afraid despite the fact that he told me he supports gay marriages, because who knows what his reaction will be if he knows his oldest daughter is queer?
My dad and I are very close---I grew up in the kitchen with him cooking meals and making bread. He also taught me how to do carpentry and to do sculling since none of my brothers were interested in that. I love my dad very much, and I don't want to disappoint him at all by coming out to him.

I enjoyed reading this thread. When I was out canvassing I encountered a number of Reps who are planning to vote Dem this year, for a variety of reasons. That was very encouraging. I think many are unhappy this election.

We need more good Texans voting Democrat this year and for years to come. Tell your Dad to check out DU and may be some local Dem meetups; we may yet get him to help us turn things around.
Congratulations Misunderestimator! Tell your Dad that other Texans are out here fighting for Texas. We will never give up and never surrender.

But I send him articles from here all the time. Glad to hear that there are other Texans fighting the good fight! :toast:
