Halloween is the devil's birthday?
A kid I *used* to watch up until recently, informed me last week that he and his sister were not allowed to trick-or-treat (or celebrate Halloween at all) because it is the devil's birthday and they don't celebrate the devil.

HUH???

Last I knew, Christianity hadn't assigned a day of celebration for the birth of the devil. However, I haven't attended Sunday school for more than 16 years so things could have changed over time ....

10. Jack Chick is embarrassing.
Those tracts preach only to the converted, to make you feel superior to non-believers.

There ARE decent Christian resources out there, like www.tentmaker.org. (Not what you might expect.)

13. LMBFAO!!!
That was hysterical!!!! I love it when Christians talk about "witches" who worship the devil!! Don't they realize that Wiccans/Pagans don't need an evil force to keep them from doing the right thing? There isn't a devil in Wicca/Paganism.

But you gotta love those devil worshiping witches that come out to celebrate the birthday of the devil on Halloween!!

I didn't know what to say to this kid. It did slip out a little when I said, "Are you serious?" (I really didn't mean for that to come out but couldn't help it) He said, "That's his (Dad) belief and he can have his belief!!"

Then he walked into my house with the automatic witch on the rocker ... the witches on signs .... etc. All decorations that I had just put up that day. My outside decorations had prompted his initial comment.

Unbelievable.

2. That's ridiculous.
Didn't halloween start out as something to get rid of the evil spirits? I mean, Lord have mercy, It's kids dressing up as Princesses and doctors and begging for candy. They have truly lost their minds.

4. OK first of all
Satan - the Devil etc is a made up entity made up by the church to scare people into submission.

So since there is no devil - why would you celebrate a birthday?? LOL

that's assanine.

7. Nah.
All hallows eve, from the Christian tradition. Samhain from the old religion.

But "the devil's birthday"? Must be from the church of "let's make stuff up as we go along".

meaning spirit which is also the root of divine.

Fuck these mind control pigs.

12. Somebody posted this elsewhere here,
and if I could find it, I'd link to the thread. Somebody's being disingenuous, making up a 'god of death' and claiming the old religions worshipped him, and that his name was Samhain. It had been debunked by (if I remember correctly) a language scholar, who said Samhain only ever meant 'summer's end' -- but hey, why let the truth get in the way of scaring the holy shit out of your kids, huh?

16. Samhain marks harvest/summers end.
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 12:16 AM by mn9driver
It is a pagan celebration which marks the fruit of the Mother and the dormition of Her womb until the following spring.

It has nothing to do with a "death god". Sheesh.

17. Exactly -- I've known people who study the stuff,
though I don't. It takes advantage of the ignorance of people who don't know it to start with and never question anything, though -- nothing new about that.

8. Halloween was orginally a pagan holiday
which has nothing to do with Satan or satanism.

9. What a twist . . .
It was a part of Christianity for a long time. The vigil for All Saints Day has been celebrated for hundred of years.

This twisted "devils day" is just silly crap from Bob Larson and his ilk.

19. What utter crap.
Every year, members from my church put together a Halloween party in someone's barn.

Please keep in mind that people like the one writing those tracts are not mainstream Christians. They are a misguided, lunatic fringe.
