Not competitive or anything, just loves the sport. There are only a few gymnasts who look "stunted and freakish" and that has more to do with genetics than training.

Perhaps people with small body types tend to be more successful at the Olympic level, probably due to gravity, but if you watch high school and college gymnastics, they mostly look quite normal.

a lot to do with malnourishment and delaying puberty. If your daughter becomes serious, please read the book Little Girls in Pretty Boxes - it's quite an eye opener as to what goes on behind the scenes. Once parents are no longer allowed to observe practices, watch out! thanks for listening.

realized it, they had so much time and money invested, it seemed the right thing to do. Plus, I refused to quit. And, as I said, since they were barred from practices, they had no idea of the yelling and screaming and berating that went on - I certainly never told them.

young age and are not eating properly when their body needs fat and other nutrients to grow. The studies are amazing. Elite gymnasts have the same bone density as 70 year old women. They literally do not have periods for years and months at a time.

Look at the picture I posted at the bottom. It's of an elite gymnast within 3 years after quitting the sport. My, my what a little proper nutrition will do for a body.

During the Barcelona Olympics, Shannon Miller's coach wouldn't let her and the other girls he coached leave their hotel rooms because he was afraid they would EAT. The male gymnasts felt sorry for them and smuggled food into their rooms.

The combination of starvation and intensive training delays puberty, and some competitors never menstruate until they stop competing--in one case, at age 25.

The lasting effect of this is that former gymnasts are especially susceptible to osteoporosis, because they have a shorter lifetime period of producing estrogen than the average woman.

48. I was thinking the same thing.

Some women are naturally thin and it's simply good health to try to stay in a healthy range, but often serious gymnasts are so tiny and thin, that they are underweight (BMI under 18.5) which can cause menses to stop (or never happen) and can it put her health at risk. Women's bodies were meant to have functional reproductive systems for optimal health in many areas (heart, bones) from teens to menopause. Sometimes illness or issues happen on their own, but why unnecessarily put oneself at risk?
