3. Is that the one
postulating a *really* exaggerated punctuated equilibrium?

Where the next evolutionary step will have 52 chromosomes?

(I'm groping for non-spoiler specifics here...)

If so, I've read it.

7. Starts out with finding a Neandrethal couple in a cave
in the Alps. Great Sci-Fi and was a book I just couldn't put down.

9. Yeah, that's the one
The evolutionary premise is, I think it's fair to say, a little far-fetched-- that's why I called it really exaggerated.

Back in the last century I would've described the social consequences as equally far-fetched, but no longer-- I read Orcinus regularly :-( And the action of that senator from North Carolina (I think that's who it was-- and again, I'm trying *really hard* not to give away important plot elements) would fit right in with the ethics of the Norquist/DeLay wing of the Partei.

Anyway, I agree, very engaging book. Recommended to SF-literate DUers.

12. it was tedious
They spent more time in meetings than the middle books in the "Children of Violence"/Martha Quest series and with Lessing I was interested in the characters, with Bear, not so much. However, this book means a lot to a lot of people, so you may enjoy it much more than I did.

My favorite Bear will remain Blood Music, although I'll keep an eye out for any time he does something new.

14. My favorite Greg Bear story was Forge of God.
Made me cry. And that's odd for Sci-fi.
