My oh my How I love Tom Waits
I understand there have been quite a few Waits appreciation threads over here in the lounge. I have not been able to attend so I'd like to try and start another.

Right now listening to "Warm Beer & Cold Women". Oh how I love this man. His music, his statements on art and music, his perspective on the world. Wow wow wow. Just can't say enough great things about him. :bounce:

The Outkas pics are part of my sig line not part of this post. Just thought I'd clear that up.

3. One of the greatest living American artists
Very few people create art at the level that he does. His sound is entirely his, from the vacuous, ancient tones of his instrumentation to his gravelly voice.

6. No doubt about it.
I didn't realize he lived right over in Sanoma (I'm in SF). As Frank Zappa once said "timbre is genre." I can't think of a more glaring example of this precedent than Tom Waits. Just as brilliant that he actually charted a completely NEW genre with his sound. No one does what he does so he's created his own category of music and sound. But he's so modest and humble as well.

10. Ever see Robert Altman's "Short Cuts"?
He has a part in it as Lily Tomlin's trailer park husband. There's a scene in which he downs one of those airline mini-bottles of booze and slams it down on the ground in anger. I laugh hysterically every time I see that.

12. No!
I need to see that, definitely. He's also in Jim Jarmushs' most recent "Coffee & Cigarettes" which I have not seen but haven't heard great things about.

But he's also in "Mystery Men" as the inventor guy. Hilarious!!

Tried to make the cover my avatar, but failed... too grainy looking.

I LOVE Green, 'lay your head where my heart used to be'... mmmmmm that's nice.

I also really like How's it Going to End, but doesn't everyone? :)

I'll take your word for it as I've never ever been let down from anything I've heard from him.

And there's still so much that I haven't yet heard!!

15. If you have a chance,
try to catch a live performance (somewhat rare). I've seen him twice and both times were spectacularly great :)

16. Saw him in Austin Texas
before I really knew very much about him. Was dragged along. Have been an avid fan every since. Matter of fact it was seeing him live that turned me into a fan. His live show was magnificent. As artistic as it was musical. Totally off the wall.

18. It is an SF bay area law
that you have at least two of the following three items:

Body piercing
Tom Waits music
Charles Bukowski book

If not I do believe you will be forced to wear a soul patch as poseur penance.

A friend gave me some story about Outkast campaigning for Bush. It sounds like bull to me. I love Outkast and did not believe it. Have you ever heard similiar hooey?

21. Indeed I have
and it is just that: hooey. What was the source of the story they gave you?

Dre went to both conventions out of what I beleive he called "curiosity". Someone snapped his shot at the Repub convention and it all of the sudden got spun as him campaigning for Bush. Not so.
