What's your favorite gun?
I like the Winchester Model 94. It's a 30-30 caliber rifle. It's a classic, old-school rifle, but still popular. I dig the lever action too.

It's perfect for deer hunting. In fact, it's the classic deer hunting rifle.

With that in mind...

Or .408 Cheyenne Tactical... "reach out and touch someone".

Neither is up to benchrest standards, but they have a certain allure.

9. Loved my Model 94
Sold it a few years back but remember it fondly.

I also had a Marlin 7 shot .22 rifle that I really liked - synthetic stock and a good scope. Very nice rifle but I sold that too.

Right now, I have a Mossberg .12 gauge pump shotgun with a pistol grip that I absolutely love. Oh, and my Sig Sauer .9 mm P228 handgun.

It's a great weapon, probably the best mass manufactured assault weapon today.

Too European for me, damn it, it's just looks like John Kerry's favorite gun.....(typical freeper response to this weapon  )

Honestly, I'd take this gun any day over the American M-16, if I was going into battle. The spent cartridge eject method is so much more efficient and less dangerous to a squad in close quarters combat. Also, I've read this weapon is a quite accurate over 200 meters (something most assault rifles can't claim.)

20. M109 howitzer
The new M109A6 self-propelled 155mm howitzer has the inertial navigation system on it. With INS, you can bring the battery to a halt from the march, lay it, fire a mission and be gone before counterbattery fire reaches your firing position. The days of three-day artillery barrages ended when the Firefinder radar was deployed. Now you gotta shoot and scoot, and the M109 lets them do this.

My favorite military rifle is the Steyr AUG-1. It's made in Austria and a lot of countries use it in various places--the US Coast Guard is said to use this rifle. This is a slick system. It comes in three colors--green, tan and black--and four barrel lengths. You can change barrel lengths without any tools and without re-headspacing the rifle. The whole action drops out the back if you wear out the one it came with. Plus, it has a telescopic sight instead of just iron sights--someone in Austria figured out troops shoot better with a scope on their rifle.

My favorite civilian rifle is the Weatherby Mark V. That is one high-class firearm. My favorite civilian rifle that I can afford is the Ruger M-77.

My favorite automatic pistol is the H&K P7. Love that squeeze-cocker.

Revolver? Ruger Redhawk, .44 Magnum caliber.

If I had to get a shotgun, I'd get the Remington 870 pump. I know all about how the 1100 is super reliable, very accurate, all that. If I was a trap shooter firing doubles, I would definitely get an 1100 if my local trap range allowed them. But for home defense, when you cycle the action on a pump shotgun, people will fucking LEAVE! People who are allowed to be in your house will leave. That psychological edge is what makes the pump shotgun superior for shooting intruders--usually you don't have to.

74. My favorite artillery story
In World War I, the Krupp Werke in Germany built a weapon called the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Geschuetze. The gun fired a 94-kilogram shell and had a maximum range of 130 kilometres; its shells flew to the height of 40 kilometres--a height not exceeded until the Nazis started firing rockets from Peenemuende in World War II.

The gun was nicknamed the "Paris Gun" because that's what they used it for--shelling Paris from so far away the French couldn't fire counterbattery missions against it.

When you fire artillery, you must "register" the battery so the rounds hit where you want them to. It is done by choosing a target, firing a round at it and measuring the distance between the target and the round's point of impact, then making adjustments to the battery to zero the weapons. The Paris Gun was registered by firing a round then having your illicits in Paris go through the next day's newspaper for reports of mysterious explosions. (Sam Kinison once told a joke about the Smart Bomb and the Scud Missile. "You fire the Scud missile then go home and watch CNN to see where it landed." The Paris Gun crews actually did this.)

31. Yep. I used to love exotic guns, for years owned them, shot
them, endlessly tweaked them and polished them. Read magazines about them and put all the newest cool combat shooting things.

Then, I realized with out that old piece-of-shit GM .45 and my being a touch faster in reaction time than a Cambodian teenager, I would not even be here most likely.

Reality set in. The purpose of a gun is to kill people. The .45 does that very effectively.

32. The Lee-Enfield rifle.
Probably the best military bolt-action rifle ever. Short throw and bolt travel of only the length of the cartridge case made it the fastest-cycling bolt-action ever, and in the hands of a trained marksman it was capable of sustained rapid fire (the record being 54 aimed shots on a 300-yard target in 1 minute...with a bolt-action, reloading 5 times from stripper clips).

Edited on Thu Oct-14-04 12:25 PM by Xithras
Just bought my second CMP Garand, in fact. They are beautifully crafted, amazingly reliable, and a real piece of history. Just watch the thumb :)

The only problem at this point is that it's getting harder to find historically accurate replacement parts. Both of my Garands are over 50 years old an have worn parts in need of serious replacement. Many of the parts on the market today are focused towards the hunting market (it's apparently widely used by hunters, but I don't see how...it's heavy as hell) or the target shooting market. I have yet to find a single vendor who machines quality replacement Garand parts for owners wanting to keep them historically correct.

67. Beatiful Balance...
I shot the M-14 in competition as a teen and I really liked it, but my Dad's M1 felt so much better, especially in the standing position. He sold his after retiring from competition...

How long did it take to get a DCM Garand? I refuse to join the NRA again to get one or join a local gun club that requires NRA membership so I guess I can get my reformed :-) Dad (and lifetime member) to get one!

I would love just to own and on rare occasion shoot a piece of HISTORY...

:D

95. I don't recommend a CMP gun
It only took a month or so, beginning to end (btw, I got it through an affiliation with my local Boy Scout council), but CMP's can be so hit or miss in quality that you're really taking a chance. I got lucky with my service grade rifles, but I have a friend who bought a rack grade Springfield M1 and it can't fire more than two shots without jamming. Remember, there are no refunds or exchanges, and you are getting a military surplus weapon in the exact shape it was packed away in when the Army quit using them. Some (probably most) rifles were treated well, but some were badly abused. It's also pretty common to get CMP Garands that have duck tape or other things stuck on them, or that the soldiers have scratched their names into. It's just a chance you take.

If you really want a Garand and aren't up to taking chances, I recommend finding a local gun store that has one in stock so you can check it out first. Of course, it'll cost you. A reasonably decent Garand from a gun store will set you back $700 to $900 (and up to $2500 for a mint, never fired model), while a CMP Garand will only set you back $250 to $450.

That if Kerry gets elected, bye bye guns. What an idiotic thing to say. Apparently, no matter how many times I said you're full of shit, and present facts, he wouldn't listen.

65. .45 Mil Spec and Browning BPS 12 Ga. pump
When your HD weapon absolutely, positively has to work.

Both extremely reliable and proven for years and years.

But I do like my large loop Winchester in .45 LC too.

... and my Garand still runs great at 60 + years old and is far better out to 300+ yards than I am. Too many choices darn it!

OK, OK the .45 Mil Spec. that's my favorite ... for today at least.

Though lately I have taken a liking to Bulgarian parts kits made on Arsenal (USA) receivers.

Also.... Colt AR-15's are hard to beat.

But, again, all around favorite firearm is Mr. Kalashnikov's great invention!

98. Okay, I am so salivating to buy a new gun, now
Thanks rumguy!

Right now I would say the SKS and my beloved Mossberg 12 gauge ( love the SKS sound when it fires and just pumping the Moss will run a bad body off) but my alltime favorite gun was a little Colt 45 six shooter that hid right nice in the folds of my flannel nightgown.

The kids called me Annie Oakley for a while. I miss that gun. And I had a blast with a Glock semi-auto pistol once, but that's a long story......

Love those beautiful gun photos

101. yeah, Think of that scene in Gone Wit Da wind
when Melanie hides the gun in her gown. That was me, after a pro-choice piece I wrote was published in the local paper. Had a few freaks come around late at night, but this mama would hush the kids and motion them behind me and I'd have that little revolver hidden but ready if I needed it.

Guns are cool, and you are cool too, rumguy for starting this great thread!
