It's google's new form of hotmail except it has 1 tri-zillion times the storage space and all kinds of crazy sorting and storage capacity. You have to get an invite to open an account (but the account is free).

This is coming from me, someone who doesn't know shit about computers...so please be kind to me when you trash my explanation gmail-gurus. Just trying to help someone similarly in the dark.

Wil Wheaton (don't call him Wesley) came up with the idea of sending spare gmail invites to troops since most of the e-mail they have has limited memory (I think that's right - anyway, it was to help them be able to send/receive photos, etc. better)
