Poll question: Is it "creamed potatoes" or "mashed potatoes"?
I just went and bought lunch (Meat Loaf) for a co-worker and she had told me that as sides she wanted mixed vegetables (Yum!) and "Creamed potatoes". When I went to the restaurant it hit me-Did she mean "Mashed potatoes"?. She did, she got rice.

So which is it?

4. We called them that as kids
But I think it's because we thought that's where what mashed potatoes were called.

6. Smashed v. Mashed (Creamed)
Smashed potatoes still have a lot of texture to them. Mashed potatoes are worked until they are a smooth consistency.

18. Hmmm....I had never heard them called that.
Its actually what I prefer and what you most often get here in New England---mashed but with lumps left in them and definitely not whipped. So that is what "smashed" potatoes are? Learn something new everyday. I thought it was just a different name for mashed.

10. mashed potatoes or creamed potatoes
If you mash them with butter, they are of course mashed. If you mash them with butter and add cream or milk, then they are creamed.

21. I've heard "whipped"
But not "creamed". We used to call them "smashed" when I was a kid but that was just to be stupid.

Or you could combine the two and call them "crashed".

32. Creamed potatoes ....
as every Irish-American farm family in the north-east knows, are mashed potatoes with some cream, rather than milk, added. For many of our families, this was a big treat, especially in light of the Great Starvation back on the Old Sod.
