Do any of you get tired of the micromanagement of CivIII and go back to play Civ2 for a while?
I like a lot of the features of CivIII, but for some reason, it just hasn't grabbed me the way Civ2 did. Maybe I just need to get used to it or something.

I think you probably do have to get used to it. I love the territory markings, so cities can't get shoved in next to your own.

I love CivIII and am looking forward to CivIV (apparently in the early stages of development).
Civ2 was a great game and my feeling is that while Civ3 is a more difficult game, it has more interesting features that make it very worthwhile indeed.
When I really want to have some fun I put it on the hardest settings and see how quickly my poor humble civilization gets destroyed.

4. Alpha Centauri ate my life!................................ |
|
I love the micromanaging. However, I am a little anxious about how lost I can get in that game. I say I'm only going to play for 30 min, and it turns into 3 hours - EVERYTIME! I keep saying to myself: "just one more turn and I'll quit...."
I have heard Civ III is strikingly similar to the interface of Alpha C, and I don't need that video-game crack right now.

I don't know why, maybe it's the graphics or something. Or maybe it's the fact that I'm a Civ2 addict, so moving up to a more difficult game with totally new concepts is difficult for me.

7. I dont know, the diplomacy & military features are a lot nicer |
|
I just dont really care for the graphics. the gameplay's a lot better though. I like how enough spearmen can no longer take down a stealth fighter like they could have in Civ II. There's really a lesser level of micromanagement in Civ III since you can automate your slave units to build roads or city walls etc
after about a year I grew bored of it until I got the Conquests expansion pack which lasted me about another half year. Well worth the extra $30!
Now I've moved on to Medieval Total War which is hella awesome

8. Yes, but you almost never SEE a spearman vs tank in Civ III. |
|
The science progression makes it almost impossible to achieve that kind of tech superiority. You're lucky to have tanks vs riflemen. Mostly, it's tanks vs infantry.
The fact that a tech gets cheaper every time a new civ learns it means that all civs stay pretty even.

I still can't get the battlefield stuff down. It's a beautiful game (I've got the original, Shogun) but I just can't quite figure out how to fight.

as in training and consolidating units, then moving them to a given province? that sort of thing?
or as in conducting your forces while on theyre on the battlefield, frolicking through the fields and setting granaries ablaze and stuff like that?

I do fine on the meta stuff, it's when I get down to manipulating them in battle that I have trouble.
which is frustrating, because I'm pretty good at wargames (tabletop).

10. My Civ III problem was with levels of difficulty |
|
At the easiest level it was much too easy; at any harder level it was much too hard, or anyway annoying and frustrating, which isn't exactly what I play games for. But regardless, I long ago stopped playing Civ III, and waste much more time on Civ II Test of Time, even though it sucks rocks out loud.
The micromanagement I mostly like.

I like Test of Time. You can always play vanilla, but I've been getting into the science fiction version lately.

13. I think people just hated it because it was packaged as a new game |
|
when it was just the old one repackaged with all the expansion packs Sid had released already. I got it off the discount rack, so that didn't worry me noticeably. I like it too, except the map sizes don't correspond to the settings you put in, so the map is always a bit too large. Also the "slaughter rule" in the v1.1 patch ("You have attained Transcendance," or whatever it is) is a bit annoying. But in general, I like it a lot, too.

18. a few things I do like |
|
I like all the Alpha Centauri stuff. For instance, being able to tell a unit to go to specific spot on the map. That's nice.
The fact that each tribe has its own attributes and unique units is very nice.
I like the way you can set up more complex deals for trades and stuff.
Can't stand the new graphics. I just can't tell what I'm doing, I guess.
And I don't like the split between workers and settlers. That was something I didn't like from Alpha Centauri.
