The IGNORE function and why it just may save your sanity

I believe in my heart that the majority of DU posters are good people dedicated to helping progressive causes. I also believe there is a tiny minority dedicated to disrupting the process of open discourse by making accusations against candidates using faulty logic or questionable material.

I beg of you, the majority, to begin using the IGNORE function against these obvious disruptors. Do it now. It will save you from these maniacs.

But sgr2 is dead on: DU is being purposely disrupted by several people, and also disrupted as a casualty of posters who are immature idiots in need of a babysitter.

It's not my choice to waste my time weeding through the bullshit of the first group.

It's not my job to make the latter group feel important by reading and responding to their dribble.

And so I use the ignore key. It's the #1 rule of dealing with usenet trolls: ignore them. Works fine for the web, too.

Every once in a while I get too curious to see what "ignored" might be saying. So I switch my list on and off. But so far I haven't gleaned much useful information by turning "ignore" off. So I think it's a good feature.

Personally, I think ignoring threads rather than posters would work better for me (I already posted this in one of the Admin boards)

I don't use the ignore button. I think it would save your "sanity" only if you are thin-skinned enough to not be able to handle dissident viewpoints. I think it takes a lot of audacity to suggest you, or anyone else, has cornered the market on intelligent posts that can "safely" be read without fear of going insane. And remember:

A hero to one - is a disrupter to another.
A disrupter to one - is a hero to another.
