my dad died last night after a short fight with
pancreatic cancer.

he was at home in his own bed with his family beside him

he was an aviator and a 20 veteran of the Air Force

say a pray for his speedy passage

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Rest in Peace, Bob

19. Peace to your heavy heart, AZ
You shared a wonderful poem, and here's another:

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow;

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain;

I am the gentle Autumn’s rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush.

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft star that shines at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there;

I did not die.

As difficult as it is to lose a parent, he didn't suffer long. Now he is at peace.

The father of a friend had been in the Army Air Corps during World War II, then later did recruiting for the Air Force Academy with the rank of colonel.

After his funeral Mass, his family and friends held hands in the church sanctuary and sang the Air Force Hymn. Unfortunately, I did not know all the words, so had to hum most of it.

"Off we go, into the wild blue yonder...."

I am so sorry that you lost your dad -- it's so very hard to say goodbye to our parents, even as we must.

My dad, too, was an Air Force veteran. I know what these iron-men were made of, and I'm certain that your father was indeed a fine man, and a true gentleman.

Your dad is on the wing now, again, unhindered by the physical constraints that bind us, the living.

He is free.

81. My deepest sympathy
My dad died 5 years ago and I miss him every day.

But I am grateful he is not around to witness what this country is dealing with today in the White House. My dad was a history teacher and a lifelong Democrat and bush would disgust him beyond belief. My mom says almost every day that she is so glad Dad isn't here to see how the worst prez in history is destroying the USA.
