1. The first album by The Shins ("Oh Inverted World")
Sounds like the Beach Boys meet Big Star; but at the same time, it sounds nothing like that.

5. They are the best American band of the 21st century so far.
So you shouldn't be too surprised. :hi:

2. The Shins, Franz Ferdinand, Gavin Degraw, Jamie Cullum
All great... if they like Rilo Kiley, these may be a better fit than the MTV crap.

Chutes Too Narrow and Oh, Inverted World by The Shins are great.

6. Both Shins albums
I think both have been mentioned, but I can't reiterate this point enough:

The Shins are the greatest band of the 21st century.

try looking for ska bands too. They're always really really fun and cool. Maybe Catch 22, Skatalites, Less Than Jake, Aquabats, Reel Big Fish, etc.

Also I picked up the new Keane CD, it's kinda mellow but they might like it. I loveee it. Also some good indie pop would be Sherwood (www.purevolume.com/sherwood) and Punchline. They're both quite good. I picked up their CDs after hearing them online.

This sounds dumb, but the new Hanson album is AWESOME. I encourage you to forget MMMbop and check it out. And nobody likes hanson anymore... so it's off the mainstream. go for it.

Good luck.

Agreed w/ Gavin DeGraw, The Shins, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, all good suggestions. Also might want to check out Michael Tolcher.

15. Elliott Smith - XO = painfully well-crafted pop
Someone suggested the Shins already.
