Edited on Thu Oct-14-04 10:46 PM by HEyHEY
the kids these days have.

It was the mid-90s and most of them dressedin just jeans, a t-shirt, maybe something a little more upscale. And they seemed worldly, funny as hell and didn't take shit of anyone. Most of the ones I knew were big fans of GOOD music like the pixies, Violent Femmes, Van Morrison, stuff like that.

Now, I see these high school girls trying sooo hard to look like Jen lopez and basically allowing themselves to play the role of the submissive woman by wearing trash clothes their boyfriends like and accepting their boyfriends being backstreet wannabee womanizers. They all seem to have prissy attitidues and nothing interesting to say. What happened?

I'm not saying...I'm just saying is all.

Remember her wearing her bras on the outside of her shirts, being a "Boy Toy" and the like? Britney is just Madonna re-incarnated 20 years later.

I'm keep hedging on starting a thread saying we may be the first generation to be way wilder that the one that followed it, but I don't want to start a flame war.

The clothes young girls have marketed at them are way more expensive than ever before.

Something did happen, and I'm afraid to say, that it might be Clinton.

All the great alt. bands were spawned by the Reagan era, and grunge was born during Bush 1.

Look at how the counterculture arose during the Vietnam era. It could just be that peace and prosperity is terrible for creativity and art. I personally have a tinfoil theory about who gets marketed, and it has to do with media consolidation. I'm pretty disgusted, myself.

and Avril Lavigne is NOT punk, she is a pop princess with smeared mascara.

I owe you a drink! :toast:

AL will never, ever compare to Patti Smith, Debbie Harry, Joan Jett or Siouxie. She's a sad imitation.

There was a lot of creativity coming out in the 90s, but much of it was coming out of EBM, which lots of rock and punk fans abhor for the lack of "real" instruments and the geek factor. A lot of those artists, however, were either expat Americans or European. Perhaps as a culture we did get complacent.

Of course, the RIAA must take some of the blame for this. If they hadn't been so obsessed about squeezing EVERY SINGLE PENNY out of the artists' work, they might have been able to do their job and promote music.

38. I went to high school in the early seventies.
Oh my.

The girls I went to high school with were cool. I was terrified of them, but they were cool.

I remember "co-ed" swimming. It was our second period class, and it was an outdoor pool, and it was cold in the morning. We used to come to the pool fully dressed, wearing our swimsuits underneath, and strip down, throwing our clothes onto the bleachers and jumping into the water as fast as we could.

One day a young woman (who I later got to know better in college) was a little late to class. While all the guys were watching her from the pool she put on the most amazing strip show... underneath her clothes she was wearing this tiny black bikini.

It was great fun until some guy hanging on the edge of the pool said something rude to her, and she walked over to him seductively and then she kicked his head like it was a soccer ball.

The coach, who was a little shy around girls, and who still couldn't believe he'd let himself be duped into teaching a coed swimming class, acted as if he hadn't seen a thing.

After class he told us we'd all have to "dress out" in the locker rooms from then on.

40. So how is Alberta?
Is there a serious shortage of hot, single liberal women in Alberta, or are they just too shy to show themselves? I have an option to take a job in Edmonton and I am still considering the move from Slovenia to Canada (I'm slovenian :) ) How is Edmonton in general? I heard some people say it's the most conservative towm in Canada? I hope that's not true :(

Wow. I have so little post and the ones I make, I blow on hot sexy ch1x0r questions :)

41. I do think girls today are different than in my day
Back when I went to high school (class of '85), the "sexy" girls generally wore tight sweaters & tight jeans. Cleavage was not to be seen...nobody wore shirts/blouses/sweaters that revealed their stomachs to the world.

Nowadays, the girls are a bit chubbier than back then, but they all seem to have plunging necklines revealing a lot of cleavage.

I think it is just the fashion of the times.

I don't know about the attitudes, though. Back when I was in high school, I was way too shy to ask anybody out and girls generally didn't ask boys out. It seems like girls these days are more willing to pursue the boys they like than in the past. However, I don't really have a lot of experience with teens in this day & age.

Another thing - back in my day, the girls that got pregnant in high school seemed much more likely to have abortions.

45. No, we were cooler...
I graduated from high school in 1976. We'd saw Nixon resign on television, August 8, 1974.

I remember we were always trying to be as cool as the high school kids before us, those guys who'd been at risk of getting drafted for Viet Nam, were "hippies" etc.

We thought the "Fast Times" kids who followed us were much too apolitical. It was a kind of rebellion for them. The rowdiest "Fast Times" kids graduated from high school, put on business suits, and voted Republican.

Heh, my line in the sand...

unless you're still hanging out in high schools, your representation of them is wrong. I work with high school students now and there are plenty who are just as cool as I was :). But I remember when I was in high school, there were plenty of uncool people I disliked. There are still high school kids like that.

We like to believe that things change over time, but we really just run in cycles.
