4. Bruce would have been too quick
At least I think so. I think Ali was the greatest boxer, though.

5. Sorry, Bruce only weighed about 140
Ali was a heavyweight. Ali's punches were never very hard, but quick, just like Bruce.

Bruce would stay out of range and try something unexpected; he wouldn't try to box Ali.

7. VERY nice poll Chavez.....

This is a real toughie.

If we're talking about Ali when he was still known as Clay, when he was young and hard and fast as lightning, then I'd go with him.

I don't know....every time I hear "Bruce Lee" I think of Kareem trying to stomp Bruce like a bug...

8. there is NO CONTEST.
Martial arts vs a boxer?

It doesn't matter how much you weigh with martial arts - you use the momentum of your body to extract huge amounts of force.

Ali wouldn't stand a chance.

18. If you think that Lee would use a spinning sidekick
in a fight to the finish then you must not have much experience or knowlege of fighting.

I think Lee would try to close quickly and use a hand weapon to attack Ali's face or neck. Lots of damage beyond a KO can be done in short work. Either that or he would go for the balls...or at least I would.;)

25. "hand weapons"
closed fist
backfist
hammer fist
knife hand
spear hand
tiger claw
panther punch
1, 2 finger jab
palm
dragon claw
etc.

Also, remember Lee studied Ali's boxing footwork and incorporated it into his style. Ali, on the other hand, was a prodigious trainer and noted the style of his opponents before he faced them.

Both were smart fighters but I will give it to the heavyweight.

Lee: 5'7, 135 lbs.
Ali: 6'3 210 lbs. 82" reach

so I gave an example. :eyes:

If we're using weapons, I'll just take a gun out & shoot em both.
From a decent distance.

Boxing is a fighting art. So are the eastern martial arts. People forget that...
The most important thing that ALL of the arts teach is how to keep and control distance, so that someone can react to an attack, or generate an attack that is difficult to react to.

11. You think so?
I agree with EP above... all my martial arts instructors thought the same thing. In the school I went to we studied all forms of self defense, and I must say getting a jab to the nose was a lot more disconcerting than a kick anywhere on my body.

I still voted for Bruce, though. Just because. :)

And any decent martial artist can defend their face quite well.

16. No...
kicks are telegraphed too easy.

Both boxers and martial artists can defend their face, but the fist is faster than the foot.

26. but what kind of kick is it?
That makes a huge difference. And we are talking about Bruce Lee, not me.

Which one is coming? Where is it going? You don't know, because like 4 kicks start the same (if you do it well) but you won't know where it is going until it's too late.
Obviously you can tell a kick is coming - but unless you know which one it is, you can't defend it.

29. You can tell which leg by their torso movement
No martial artist can kick without moving their upper body in a way that tells you which leg is coming. Sure you'll have to watch for which way to block it, but the telegraphing IMO makes kicking nearly useless against a trained fighter.

32. I didn't think that Ali was trained to stop kicks.
That's why a boxer would never beat a martial artist of equal skill.

It wasn't which leg - it was which kick. Chamber your leg and throw the kick. If you do it right the kick is out too fast to defend and the upper body movement moves at the same time the kick does.

37. See post 25
tale of the tape
Ali had the speed and reach to avoid a very diminutive Bruce Lee. I think you have not seen any Lee outside the movies and I do not think you have seen many, if any, of Ali's fights.

Finally, boxing is a martial science, which is why many "martial artists" study boxing techniques. The most highly ranked kyokushin teacher in my city (here in the West Pacific) teaches boxing techniques.

31. Sure you can
get out of the way.
One of the things that boxers do very well because of their training is move. They work on their footwork an awful lot, and it results in them being able to move all over the ring really fast.
Kicks are different than punches because they have a more limited strike range, and are much more exposing for the kicker. A good boxer may be able to move back, avoid the kick, and come right back in with a punch before the kicker would be able to recover balance.

He shocked the world!!! He shocked the world!!!

He's a BAAAAD man!!! He's pretty!

He MUST BE THE GREATEST!!! HE MUST BE THE GREATEST!!!

And how about the greatest subversive line of the 60's, when asked why he wouldn't go to Vietnam: "cause ain't no Vietnamese ever called me nigger."

I LOVE ALI!!!!

I boxed golden gloves when a young teen, and I did my best to imitate.

21. I say Lee
Lee was quicker and was more versatile as far as what weapons he could use. Weapons I mean, Lee could kick, punch, spin, etc.

Ali had the power but I think Lee's speed would take the power.

Cuz, dude, he could like, totally do that. I saw this thing on the web once...

Seriously, Bruce could stand in front of you and knock you down with a three inch punch. Ask Steve McQueen and Lee Marvin.
