CNN Poll: Do you think sexual preference is a choice?
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 03:36 PM by dnvechoes
YES
NO

I don't know, but is there *no* room for "Maybe" and "sometimes"?

Personally, I don't care if it's a choice or genetic - do what you like, that's what I said.

(main poll for the moment)

2. Wow, that's even loaded through its wording.
"Sexual preference?" You mean like position? Or lights on/lights off?

"Is sexual orientation a choice?" is a more valid question, perhaps. In which case -- no. People don't choose who they find attractive.

12. My thoughts exactly...
"Preference" implies a choice.

"Is sexual choice a choice?" Well I guess we know what the author of that poll thinks.

Here's a better poll question: Is intolerance of non-monogamous heterosexual lifestyles a choice?

3. Howabout a "Doesn't Matter" choice, CNN?
To me it doesn't matter of sexual preference is a choice or not. Even if it IS a choice, it's none of anyone elses puritanical business.

4. Those imbiciles at CNN actually used the word "preference"....
Let's skew the poll right at the outset, eh, CNN?

No, it is NOT a choice. That plays right into the "special rights" bullshit the homophobes use to deny us the same rights heteros have.

But I'm glad the "no" votes are winning in that poll. :-)

7. "Preference" and "choice" are the same thing, you morons.
God, they're getting stupider and stupider, aren't they?

8. I'm glad that a bunch of people who aren't have an opinion about it
dumbasses. Why don't they just ask one of us? Why don't they ask themselves when they chose to be heterosexual?

CNN - well, 'nuff said.

And here's the kicker: SO WHAT. Even if in an alternate universe it's a choice, here in America it is a freedom to choose to do whatever the hell you want to do as an adult as long as it's not hurting anyone else.

That poll just plays on ignorance and stupidity.

11. Right, but isn't it true that most people, subtracting societal pressure,
conventions, etc, are probably somewhere in between 100% hetero and 100% homo? And thus we all, to a degree, choose?

That's not to say that most people don't fall far on one side or the other, but I think there is a small degree of choice in it, even if it's just the choice to deny it and to try to brainwash yourself into believing your preference is other than it truly is.

Or maybe I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. I do know that some people experiment out of choice, and more power to them.

Bottom line, as you say, even if it is a choice, it's none of your damned business.

15. I completely agree with you
I think most people are somewhere on a sliding scale. It's (same sex) not a huge leap for most people, especially considering what masturbation implies.

The problem is that life is complicated and many people with frail little minds want things in very simple black and white categories so their head won't assplode. It's just not reality, and in a way it's damaging to impose those rigid concepts on people especially about something as personal as sexuality. If it was less of a big deal I think it would be healthier for everyone.

And I think life is so much more interesting when you can see more than just two colors.

14. I chose to be gay
after seeing your pic in your avitar :P Seriously though, I wonder just how many gays and lesbians, if any, chose the choice option. Just how many chose to be gay, have parents disown you, not be able to get married or have children or adopt. The born again Christians are the ones who most often to judge us and condemn us, want to pass legislation against us, and then wonder why we aren't receptive to their message. ITS NOT A CHOICE! But even if it were, what would it matter? It is OUR choice and OUR life. Let us live it and stop trying to legislate your morals onto other people.

9. Yes, I agree
Who cares if it's a choice? The question only matters if you assume that it's a bad thing. It's almost like asking "is being gay a personal fault, or is it a natural defect?".

16. I'm sure so many people decide:
"Yes, I choose a sexual expression that might break my parents' hearts, ostracize me growing up, result in discrimination in where I can live and where I can work, risk being branded a pedophile by idiots who can't distinguish the difference, and get my ass kicked every day by closeted homophobes." I'll bet Matthew Shepard's last thoughts were, "Damn. Poor choice." Yeah. It's a choice all right. :eyes: :grr:
