What's the last CD you bought?
I gave in and bought Hilary Duff's self-titled CD at iTunes for the lower $9.99 price. I must say she's made a nice transition from really bubblegum pop to pop and rock. Though it isn't exactly up to the level of pop/rock stars such as Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne, Vanessa Carlton, The Corrs, The Rembrandts, Evan and Jaron, and The Donnas. Hilary's CD gets a B-, which is a whole grade improvement from the C- of Metamorphosis. Hilary's voice would normally drop it a little more, but I thought the CD is more enjoyable than a C+.

So what CD did you most recently buy?

28. Tom Waits in "Coffee and Cigarettes"
Coffee and Cigarettes is a series of situation viginettes shot in black and white.

Tom Waits is in one with Iggy Pop.

There's a good one with Alfred Molina & Steve Coogan, and another one with Bill Murray that's real funny.

I recommend it.

5. Radiohead stuff
I picked up 3 Radiohead (Hello Computer, the one with the dummy thing on the cover and hail to the Thief) CDs after buying Kid-A after someone here in the lounge said they sucked, and I figured I better find out for sure.

So far I'm impressed!

I'll check out Amnesiac once I've become familiar with these. I've had Pablo Honey for a decade. I love Creep, but never got much into the rest of the album. I'll have to give it another go.

25. Blasphemy!
Who would say Radiohead sucks?! Radiohead is brilliant stuff. Yes, "the dummy" one is The Bends, and it's OK Computer, not "Hello". OK is timeless, a great transition album from The Bends to Kid A. "Subterranean Homesick Alien" and "Let Down" are amazing. There are some good tracks on Pablo Honey, too, like "Creep" (of course), "Anyone Can Play Guitar", and "You".

Thanks for the clarifications on the album names. I'm still new to it.

Kid-A really impressed me in the fact that it took some chances and explored some new ground which is so uncommon these days.

I wonder how they would be live...

40. Well, I know a little about that...
...'cause I've seen them twice - once in Cuyahoga Falls, OH in the summer of 2001 and again in Chicago last summer. If you ever get a chance to see them live, jump on it. It'll give you an even better appreciation for their music. They are absolutely incredible live.

I agree about Kid A - I was instantly addicted the first time I heard it. Bands like Radiohead, and albums like Kid A, just don't come around too often.

hoping it would be good, or biting, or anti-War or something. My reaction to one listen was that Mssr. Stipe needs to get his head out of his navel and get back to reality. He should quit whining and start bitching again. That boy has been in therapy too long!

Steve Earle's latest on the other hand, was just what the Dr. ordered.
F--- the FCC and The Revolution Starts Now. Mr. Stipe needs some schoolin' from Steve.

Cheesey, Bush-loving, bubble-head dreck singer--Hillary Fluff! A guilty pleasure in 10 years just like Justin and Britney---ewww! Last CDs I bought and recommend--Joss Stone--awesome R&B soul from a British white chick and 17 at that--very good (Dusty Springfield comes to mind). And for those swinging 60s children like me got Brian Wilson's "Smile"--bold, beautiful and I need to drop some LSD and listen to both "Smile" and The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper". Aaaaahh--those were the days!

Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 03:46 PM by asthmaticeog
"Strategies Against Architecture III." I'm a couple of years late on picking it up, but I'm glad I finally did. It documents the ten-year phase of their long career where they transitioned from an assaultive, chaotic experimental noise group to a more pensive, brooding sound. They've kept up with making their music with implements that aren't traditionally considered instruments though (most notoriously the power-drills rigged to a shopping cart on their seminal song "Abfackeln"), and also rotated out some significant band members, and also lost a collaborator to death. Given all the turmoil, this collection distills an incredible body of work. A+

Frontline Assembly-Reclamation

A collection of tracks from 89-95.I had a few of the tracks already but this has a different mix for one of them.Still one of the best industrial acts ever, though the early tracks are starting to show their age, especially when compared to some newer acts.
B-

Pig Destroyer-Terrifyer

Holy fargin crap!It doesn't get any more brutal, aggressive and plain old COOL than this.Lighting fast riffs scrunched in between screaming vox and blitzkrieg drumming. It's 2 cd's.The first one is 21 songs like I decribed above. The second one is one long "song" (33 minutes) that is just a story, recored in Dolby 5.1 Surround even!.Instead of the brutality of disc one this one ventures into slower, ambient Fantomas-like territory.
Disc 1 gets an A+
Disc 2 gets a B-

Pig Destroyer is most definatly NOT for the faint of heart or unadventurous. If you absolutely need something to get rid of the in-laws or drive your spouse to divorce, this is it.Other than that I wouldn't recommend them to anybody.Seriously. :D

I've never felt one way or the other about them before but the new one is easily my pick for CD of the year so far.It just kept growing on me and growing on me.I really like that they dropped the old vocal approach for a more subtle style."Bridges" is both the heaviest and the softest song in years :)

71. I like it for the same reasons
Its much more mello and moody than their older stuff (though they have been gradually evolving in this direction), and I do like it, but not being averse to the more agressive/abrasive style that characterized their previous records, I dont think its their best. I'd probably have to go with Times of Grace or Enemy of the Sun for that honor. However, since they're one of my favorite bands, its sort of like a Beatle fan saying he'd choose the White Album over Sgt. Pepper and Revolver.

Bridges is awesome. I also really like No River to Take me Home. I'm seeing them nov. 6 at the troubadour in LA. first time they've been around in 3-4 years.

I like abrasive stuff (listening to Pig Destroyer as I type!),but I think the newer stuff just works a little better for them.I've been listening to Enemy of the Sun a lot more since the new one came out and I'm starting to appreciate it more and more. You can see a definate progression from Cd to Cd (Souls at Zero seems a LONG time ago :) ).

Hope you have a great time at the show!

77. Pulp - "Different Class"
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 08:39 PM by GOPNotForMe
SO. GOOD. As far as '90s Britpop goes, they are superior to Blur and Oasis in my opinion.

EDIT: Oops, didn't realize I was posting to your comment and not the original one!

83. "Different Class" is an incredible album
I love Jarvis Cocker's swagger. I'm an Oasis fan too. I saw that documentary "Live Forever" about 90's Britpop. There is some pretty interesting and funny commentary in there from Jarvis and the Gallaghers. It made me a bit nostalgic.

I like these lyrics from "Mis-shapes":

"Mis-shapes, mistakes, misfits. Raised on a diet of broken biscuits, oh
we don't look the same as you, we don't do the things you do, but we
live around here too. Oh really. Mis-shapes, mistakes, misfits, we'd
like to go to town but we can't risk it, oh 'cause they just want to keep
us out. You could end up with a smash in the mouth just for standing
out. Oh really. Brothers, sisters, can't you see? The future's owned by
you and me. There won't be fighting in the street. They think they've
got us beat, but revenge is going to be so sweet. We're making a move,
we're making it now, we're coming out of the side-lines. Just put your
hands up - it's a raid yeah: We want your homes, we want your lives,
we want the things you won't allow us. We won't use guns, we won't
use bombs, we'll use the one thing we've got more of - that's our
minds."

92. Good, but not their best. This is Hardcore is considerably better.
Of course, it needs to be pointed out the Britpop was an atrocity.

93. I enjoyed "This is Hardcore"
Just not as much as "Different Class." And Britpop was considerably better than most pop in the US in the '90s.

96. Nah, see people only remember the good. Let's look at the bands.
Cast - dreadful
Menswear - worse, probably the worst
Sleeper - woeful
Ocean Colour Scene - pitiful
Elastica - occasionally good, massively derivative
Oasis - massively derivative
Blur - good, but they knew it, therefore cocky.
Suede - lousy singer with a fantastic guitarist, later lousy singer with derivative guitarist.
Pulp - good.
Lush - floundering shoegazers desperately trying to latch onto the current trend.
Shed 7 - terrible
I've probably forgotten a few. I hope so. History certainly has.

I knew a girl who was obsessed with Ocean Colour Scene
She also thought that the British did blues better than Americans. She was a stupid twunt if there ever was one. Which is why I dated her.

Oasis reminds me of music for hooligans that was somehow absorbed into the mainstream. The Gallagher brothers are snotty little bastard who take themselves more seriously than anyone else does.

Pulp, however, is terrific.

It's great..if you like her music. New renditions of "oldies" when she was with "Eurythmics and new stuff. Kind of fits the times we live in, for some reason..with me, anyway.

100. OH yeah! Saw the North American Premiere live show, too!
It was really quite amazing! Go see it if you get the chance, you won't regret it!

Especially cool was the first 1/2 hour of the show, which was an "unplugged" set of early Beach Boys tunes, with the ENTIRE band singing! There were at least eight voices on some of the songs, and the harmonies were nothing short of earth-shattering.

The Great American Song Book and Volume II.

Which I love listening to him singing those classics from yesterday. I bet he didn't imagine he'd be singing those when he was rocking in the 70s' which I loved his style then and now.

"It Had To Be You"..."

from volume II..."As Time Goes By"...

85. I have many, many gigs of downloads, but if it's good I buy the cd.

Anita Baker's new album I downloaded before it was even released, because I wanted to hear it. I knew it was going to be a 10 out of 10 and she didn't disappoint me. I have to buy it to support her.

I downloaded Akon's cd, because I heard a few songs that I liked. I was very impressed by it, so I bought it. I know he's an up and coming artist, and if he doesn't get a lot of sales, they won't let him make a 2nd cd. It was a very deep cd. He talks about trying to get a job and live out your life after being in jail and being a felon, and how hard it is to do. I've lived through exactly what he's talking about, so his lyrics went right to my soul....I had to by it.

My last two buys before that were the lastest Alicia Keys and Al Green cds.

98. Brian Wilson's "Smile", Modern English's "After the Snow", and...
-- Wire's "Wire on the BOX:1979" (live CD/DVD from German TV),
-- Paco del Pozo's "Vestido de Luces" (young flamenco cantaor/singer, doing it "old school"),
-- Ketama, "Toma Ketama" (recent CD by early "Nuevo Flamenco" innovators.

I tend to by CDs only a few times a year, and I tend to buy in bulk.
