how do you register a website so it shows up on Google?

2. Get another site to link to it.

Get a site that's already in the Google index to link to it--or several such sites, if possible. Google is all about following links, and they'll find you, probably within a few days after someone links to you.

Reasonably self-explanatory, takes about a month. As noted above, getting other sites to link to you helps your Google ranking; however it isn't required. You do however have to link to somebody or the Googlebot will never find you.
