Ever read the full lyrics to "This Land is Your Land?"
Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

Chorus

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the Relief Office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

Chorus X2

I guess that explains why we never got past the first couple of verses in grade school.

1. He had Socialistic tendancies
that's why you do not hear all the stanzas.

In Catholic school in the late 60's , early 70's we heard/sang all of them.

10. Woody was a Communist
Pete Seeger can vouch for that, although Woody would downplay it by saying. "I ain't necessarily a Communist, but it is true I have been in the red most of my life."

4. We sang the whole song in my school in the '70s
Of course, my music teacher was a feminist and the first teacher I had who made us call her "Ms." I really liked her; she was a great teacher and a big influence on me.

5. it's an amazing song. its popularity is astounding
given how "communist" it is. it amazes me as much as john lennon's "imagine", which is both communist and atheistic. i'm constantly amazed that such songs are celebrated by the very people who would never tolerate any other display of communism or atheism.

i heard an npr(?) show about this song. turns out there are about 20 different verses out there that woody guthrie used at one time or another in his various performances. sadly i can't remember any of them well enough to reproduce them....

7. Woody Guthrie was a man of the people
who got his inspiration from the failed economy of the Hoover administration.
Amazing how well it works for today too, huh?

11. Is it that I am dazed that I don't see the commie part or why it would be
censored? Is it the part about it being all of of our land? Heck the pledge was originally thought of by a socialist baptist minister.

12. Welfare and pro-trespassing.
Yup. Commie alright. You have to consider the hysteria of the red scare to see why this song is "communist."

It's kind of like now how Cat Stevens is a terrorist because he's a muslim.

13. When I said it above
Pete Seeger really did say that about Woody, and back in the Depression, there wasn't a red scare stigma like in the 20's or 50's (and on through Reagan). It was damn near mainstream to be a communist. Woody wrote columns for communist and socialist newspapers. He felt a great kinship with them, and more power to his original draft of "This Land" (written as a response to Irving Berlin's awful 'God Bless America').

I have Woody's only known recording of the 'sign' lyric on the Mo Asch Recordings set.

14. There is a wonderful children's book...
illustrated by Kathy Jakobsen that lists the whole song. She illustrates every stanza and it's just beautiful.

We have a lot of the Smithsonian recordings of Woody's music -- great kids' music. Kicks ass over Barney or Radio Disney.
