6. WYWH and Animals should have been one record |
|
I saw the tour where they rolled out WYWH. They played three new songs: "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," which had "Have a Cigar" in the middle; a song called "Gotta Be Crazy," and a song called "Raving and Drooling." I have the hard evidence too, a concert program they were selling at the gig with the lyrics to those songs in it (except for "Have a Cigar," which made me think that they were all still works in progress).
Of course when WYWH came out, "Shine On" was the backbone of it, with the instrumental bits (which I'd thought were elongated for the concert setting) stretched out even further, and extra simple songs like the title track and "Welcome to the Machine" added in. And the other two songs weren't even there-- they resurfaced later as "Dogs" and "Sheep" respectively.
One problem with analyzing Pink Floyd is that they've essentially been five different bands in their career: Syd's trippy 1967 creation, the echo-laden space band of Ummagumma/Meddle, the newly engaged humanists of Dark Side thru Animals, the Roger Waters polemicists of The Wall and The Final Cut, and the post-Waters rich wankers :-) There are stylistic similarities overall, but comparing Piper to Animals kinda smacks of apples and orangutangs.
