Nyah nyah! I'm going to hear Ian Bostridge sing Schubert's song cycle Die Winterreise. Envy me!

3. Too bad it's Bostridge.

I for the life of me can't see what the minor uproar is about his voice. Very strange. His Schubert is pretty bland and lifeless to my taste. My biggest complaint is that he over-thinks the cycle. These are the musings of a YOUNG, lovelorn and definitely unstable teen. Many interpreters forget that and go for the "deep" interpretation...which adds a level of maturity to the cycle that to me simply becomes arch.

Listen to Jon Fredric West's Winterreise on Medici Classics with Jerome Rose. Now THERE's a tenor singing Schubert (and a Wagnerian tenor at that)! With West, it's not just that he can sing with gusto, it's also the incredible dynamic range and the many shades and colors in the voice. West did the cycle at Mannes earlier in the year. Did you get to hear it then?

Sorry if I'm taking the edge off your anticipation of Bostridge, but I can't really envy you on this one.

4. I can't agree--I quite like Bostridge.
I haven't heard your fella, but I'm quite willing to believe he's excellent, too. They can both be excellent, even though their voices and interpretations may be very different.
