5. Well, I'm "fluent" in an extremely miniscule amount of Latin.
I also have a great fondness for nanosecond-delay "I get it" jokes.

Concise and on target!

15. What amazed me about the Mannekin Pis....
...is that it was so damn small. Appropriate, eh?

16. I remember the same thing. I figure that was to keep the breweries in ...
... business.

As the (urban?) legend goes: if MannikenPis stops peeing, then the breweries of Belgium go out of business.

By the Lady of Leuven! What would I do without my Stella? :silly:

Ordering my favorite lager in Brussels, I felt a bit like Brando in 'Streetcar.'

17. I was in Brussels in 1971, visiting my relatives there....
Cannot remember what beer I drank, though I did drink beer. Also slivovitz (sp??) that my cousins had brought back from Yugoslavia (as it was known in those days).

And the "French" fries in Brussels were to die for. I recall eating in a restaurant above Grande Place and looking down over the space. Cars still parked there the, but the lights on the buildings.....

Stella is a good beer. So is Chimay ale, made by Benedictine monks in Belgium. Though I know you don't.... My high school was run by Benedictine nuns. A good order. In senior year, the poetry club to which I belonged had an end-of-year party. At school. We filled up empty beer cans (emptied by our parents) with soft drinks. LOL. The school was also a mother house, and the retired nuns would walk around the property. They saw us with beer cans and wanted one, so we'd hand them one. The expression on their faces when they tasted what was in the can was priceless....

I knew the convent there had a regular beer order...a girl in my class was the daughter of the man who owned the liquor store that supplied them.

Thanks for reminding me of that story. It makes me laugh.

19. That restaurant over the Grand Place ... it's La Maison du Cygne. ;-)
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 10:54 PM by TahitiNut
It's a mighty nice restaurant -- one of my favorites. (Karl Marx worked on the Communist Manifesto in that building.)

Small world, huh? :)

I try to stay at the Hotel Amigo when I visit ... also mighty fine.

24. Can't remember the name of the place we ate....but the view was great.
My cousins lived about a 20-minute tram ride from Grande Place.

It is indeed a small world. Brussels is a beautiful city, very underrated.
