My neighbor's bonfire is still burning.
He lit it Wednesday in the late afternoon in a huge fireball of diesel fuel. I was just standing out on the front porch and noticed a little piece of confetti falling out of the sky. Ashes from the fire. 72+ hours later.

But the smoke's not been a problem. Too cold here lately to leave the windows open.

Small favors, right?

1. Isn't that against the environmental
laws in your state? Call the Health Dept. ASAP.

2. No it isn't
It's only ever against the law here if we're in severe drought conditions, which it isn't right now.

3. Burning Plastics is illegal
Our local township says it's a Federal Offense. Is that so?

4. Short Bus is talking about yard trash
trees, brush, that kind of thing. And he lives deep in the woods... a lot like where I live.

We don't burn household trash anymore. Used to though. My grandmother did before they built the landfill.

5. no plastics
He took down most of the pine trees in his 3.5 acre yard last Christmas, and has had a huge stack of tree limbs and parts piled up since then. His land will be full of maple, oak, and elm in a few years, and he's drastically lowered his chance of a tree falling on his house when the next hurricane or ice storm blows through.

This is the time of year it's safest to burn here. Good riddance to the eyesore, I say.

And it's made for a nice light show.
