1. I loved it
Earlier today I finished reading Homegrown Democrat by Garrison Keillor and what a fine time spent with a friend I have never met. I recommend everybody buy a handful and distribute them to the Republican friends and relatives you might have in your life. Tell them sincerely to read it and then ask for their opinion back. If they actually read it and fume back at you with typical Republican scorn, you’ll know which relatives and so-called friends to remain friendly with, but still will want to avoid at all costs.

You really get to know who Keillor really is in this book and why he has chosen the paths he has taken. And he interjects facts and incidents that never ring hollow, only true. The book makes one feel great about being an American and yes, a Democrat. Highly recommended.

2. I am about a third done
It is a crystallization of where Americans have come from in the '40's and 50's to todays full of crap Republican creature that he excoriates. Mildly humorous self-biography interspersed with long descriptions of what Republicans were and what they have become. It's fairly well-written and easy to read if you like his style you'll especially enjoy it.

4. A gentle, occasionally fierce, defense of democratic values
The thesis of the book is that core American values, democracy with a small 'd', are better represented by today's Democratic Party than by the Republicans. It's often lyrical, but bitingly satirical about the ethical and intellectual failings of the Bush administration. It's a good book to read if you find yourself furious with the Republicans, because it reminds us that anger should always be a temporary emotion, not the basis for a political agenda. (For Keillor, the basis of Democratic values is compassion, a word he can't forgive GWB for hijacking.)
