I think this series is proving there's no maybe about it . . .
while these two teams are pretty close in talent, the Yankees have the edge in discipline and focus . . . that's just who they are in October . . . the Sox seem to be just the opposite -- a kind of "do your own thing" attitude that may be fun in the clubhouse, but is disaster in the playoffs . . . I wouldn't be surprised to see the Yankees sweep . . .
next up . . . Cards or Astros . . . we'll see . . . :)

6. I guess I just don't understand sports |
|
I don't get how a team can so consistently choke for generation after generation. Different players, different managers, yet they always manage to suck in the fans, only to choke at the critical moments.
I can see no logical reason for this. It defies logic. And somehow, gives them a strange and tragic allure. To be a Red Sox fan is to be a metaphor for so many things....

9. So, It's Better For The Owners To Get Rich |
|
and not the players? Remember, this is the system that the players want, not the owners, and the players are represented by a union. Why should the players give back money to the owners?
Baseball's problem is that they over-expanded. They have too many teams which thins out the talent pool. There shouldn't be any teams in Florida, let alone two.

i'm more concerned with the FANS than either the owners or the players, frankly.

11. In the NFL, The Owners Make Most of the Money |
|
Sports Illustrated did a list of the highest paid athletes in America, using their income from their sport, not their endorsements. There were five baseball players, two NBA players, and ZERO NFL players. Yet, the NFL has the biggest media contracts by far, and most of that money winds up in the hands of the owners, not the talent on the field. Additionally, NFL ticket prices are the highest for all of the sports, the public is asked to build them stadiums, and most of the owners are multi-billionaire families like the NY Jets owner, Woody Johson, an heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune.
Baseball's economic structure is designed to reward the talent, much like the rest of the entertainment industry. You don't complain when Julia Roberts or John Travolta get $20 million for one movie. Do you?

13. i don't mind their high salaries, i just want a more fair league |
|
and not allow one team to buy dominance
as for the movies, well, if there was a movie that had julia roberts and joghn travolta and mel gibson and camerean diaz and ben stiller and tom hanks and meg ryan and denzel washington and vin diesel etc etc...
and as a result of that star power, only that one movie ever got made, over and over and over again
then yes, i'd complain

14. Choking? More like strangling themselves with the bedsheet. |
|
And I loved it the way they were talking about how difficult it was for the third base coach to stop the trailing runner at the same time as waving the lead runner in. If that is what happened it is time to get a new coach, imo. Not that it would have made any difference.

15. The Sox' problem is they let the Yankees get under their skin |
|
My mom and I were talking about this last night and it seems to be really true. The Sox on paper are a great team this year, Vegas even had the odds on them beating the Yankees. But sheer talent is not enough sometimes.
The difference between the Sox and the Yankees is the Sox let themselves get so caught up in the drama of the so-called rivalry. I don't think it's the pressure so much, because the Sox have proven that they can perform under pressure if need be, but they have such a big ass chip on their shoulders when it comes to the Yankees that they can't seem to see past it. They are focused so much on beating the Yankees, instead of focusing on winning the ball game. OTOH the Yankees acknowledge that there is a history b/w the two franchises but they leave it at that, and go out there and focus on winning the game like they would if they were playing any other team. The fans like to talk trash and stuff but you never see the team engaging in it.
I'm not saying I can blame the Sox for feeling that way--shit, I'm a Knicks fan, I know about pain--but the fact is they can get the best pitchers, the best hitters, best coaches and it will never amount to a hill of beans unless they get their heads in the right place. I don't believe in the Curse of the Bambino the way a lot of people do--I don't think it's a real curse, I think it's a self-fulfilling prophecy that RSN have allowed themselves to buy into for too long. They'll never win unless they can truly get past the negativity and focus on themselves rather than the Yankees.
My two cents, anyway. YMMV.
