Should There Be A Salary Cap on Entertainers? |
|
For all of those complaining about the salaries of baseball players, why should they cap their income while Britney Spears makes millions performing sub-par pop songs or John Travolta gets $20 million to make a sequel to "Battlefield Earth" (which he is doing btw). Why should the players give back money to the owners?
The players fought long and hard over many decades to get the current compensation system in place. What benefit is it to them to give money back. Now, if you say, "for the good of the game", then you have to prove that teams are suffering financially. Baseball is as popular as ever. New stadiums are being built. Attendance is strong. Interest is strong.
Now, if you're talking about the NHL, then you do have a point. That league has no national broadcast contracts, and the teams are indeed suffering.

1. No--because they make a LOT of money for other people. |

That's the reason they make so much. In this country athletes and entertainers are valued more than teachers. Teachers don't make money for anybody.
When Britney puts on a show, the venue makes money, Pepsi makes money, her label makes money, the guy selling t-shirts makes money, MTV makes money, etc. etc.etc.
You'd better believe that when Julia Roberts get 20 million a picture, someone in some movie company is making MORE than that.
If you're saying gee, should someone who spends half the game sitting down make millions of dollars (cough cough BASEBALL cough cough), that's something else. Of course it's ridiculous, but that's America!

5. Baseball players and actors make the money |
|
because the producers of their events are raking in FORTUNES. It isn't the peanut vendor who is cashing in.
Performers, however, do support largely unionized industries of prop, camera, scenic design, costume design, film editing and processing, baby wrangling, title making, and etc. Stay in your seat at the end of a film sometime (I ALWAYS do) and read that list of credits. Every name there took home a decent paycheck from that film. (Hey, and not to mention the lucky devils who get to rent out their homes and property as locations. My cousin once lived for months on what a Redford film paid him for using his apartment in one scene.)
An actor who can repeatedly draw large audiences is worth every dime he gets.

7. I want to strangle people who get up right when the movie ends, LOL. |
|
That's a tad violent, but I don't really think people understand how much hard work goes into putting a movie together. I sit there basically out of respect. And to think about the movie a little bit.
And yeah, I do go "they all get paid more than I do *snif snif*" LOL.

9. I look at those names, which come from everywhere |
|
And realize each name is a separate struggle and triumph. The names of women, Hispanics, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, Italians.........all the American immigrant names.
Movies didn't list those credits originally. The workers didn't have unions originally. Fight on fight on fight. And there they are.

2. No - What benefit is there for a salary cap? |
|
I don't see any tangible benefit to a salary cap. And even if one did exist, there are so many back door ways to conpensate people.

3. If we're going to cap any type of income . . . |
|
let's cap investment income. At least entertainers and athletes are working for theirs.

6. Capping investment income would stifle investment. |
|
You can't cap it. You can, however, tax the hell out of it. That's totally different because they would simply have to invest more to get more income. Capping it would mean no matter how much they invest, they can't get more. Not a brilliant idea.
Salary caps on sports players are outrageous. As long as television advertisers pay huge amounts to networks to run these games, as long as millions tune in and then buy the products, the players are only getting a small fraction of the money in play. THEY are the ones who can be injured at any moment. THEY are the ones being watched.
I wouldn't cap CEO money, either. Just make it a set percentage over the amount paid to the lowest paid worker, including outsourced contracted workers. It'll never happen, but oh how the living standard of the world would improve.

8. It's funny how the 'free market' crowd is the first to demand salary caps |
|
for athletes. It's also funny that they never suggest salary caps for CEO's or other corporate executives.

12. MLB isn't free market |
|
they have a government granted, LEGAL monopoly.
and what's wrong with a salary cap, so long as it grows with league revenue? it's more about limiting team dominance, not limiting paychecks.
