The term is generally used for ultraconservative Protestant Christians, such as most (but not all!) Baptists, Pentecostals, etc. The term results from a series of pamphlets published arount 1900 (I forget exactly when) titled "The Fundamentals". They advocated that the Bible was literally true in every detail and dictated by God, Jesus' death, burial and resurrection as a substitutionary atonement for sin, the eventual return of Jesus, and a Final Judgment. They vociferously oppose modern scholarly Biblical criticism and analysis, and scientific movements such as evolution.

The term can also be used for other religious traditions. It has been used for conservative Catholics (Opus Dei, for example), some Jews (the Hasidic movement comes to mind), many Muslims, and also many Hindus and Buddhists.

There is an excellent scholarly series from the University of Chicago covering various aspects of various fundamentalisms, and the series comes under the general title "The Fundamentalism Project". Search for them on Amazon.com.

21. Every time I hear something like this, I think of something

that happened back in the 80's, when this was all relatively new. I was on a military vessel, a polar icebreaker. Now, my brother is gay, and being on a military vessel, there were lots of ultra-conservative members (though granted, the ratio was better in the CG). I was constantly trying to get them to change their tone. Always talking about how it was God's retribution, how the gays deserved it, and all those variations. It was a losing battle, I never could convince them to see it differently.

Until one Deep Freeze. Both the Polar Star, and our sister ship, the Polar Sea were involved in this one. The Polar Star pulled into Callao, Peru, and sailors being sailors, everyone had fun during the port call. Anyway, we pulled out, completing the last leg to Antarctica. About 2 weeks later, the Polar Sea pulled into Callao - upon their departure, they sent us a message. Seems that 82% of the prostitutes in Callao had tested positive for HIV/AIDS (or whatever it was called then, I forget exactly) --- that shut the fools up pretty quickly.
