I have stage 2 breast cancer
Please go here and then come back and read my story........

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=106&topic_id=11273

To all of my friends - I hesitated posting this but then read the above link.

My older son went with me to Dr. Pahnke's office. Because I am still on aspirin therapy for my heart, he could not do the biopsy to determine the type of malignancy. That is scheduled for Monday - my younger son will take me. Tuesday, I will have a scan of my chest and abdomen to determine if it has spread to other parts of my body.

There are some things still up in the air - it is definitely in 2 nodes under my right arm - I will definitely lose my right breast. Depending on where else it has gone in my body depends on if they can put in a prothesis at the time of surgery.

My onocologist will be Dr. Grubbs - older brother of my heart doctor.

I feel safe in the hands of my medical team.

the survivor rates are very high for breast cancer and I'm sure you'll be one of them

this just reinforces how important it is to do a self exam monthly and go to the Dr right away if there is anything suspicious

My wife has gone through the breast cancer ordeal. She is a 3 year survivor. She found great solace in asking questions and reading posts from other cancer victims on the forum listed below. I know that you have a million questions and a need to understand this intruder in your body. If you are interested-

edit:My wife had a bilateral mastectomy. Her reconstruction has been miraculous! It is absolutely amazing what they can do these days.

I was diagnosed in September of 1997. I was also
stage 2. I also lost my breast.

Life for me now is not perfect, but then it wasn't
before. More and more are surviving this dreadful
disease.

Have hope...you can do this! If you would like
to speak to me directly about it, please let me
know. I would be more than happy to discuss your
fears. Always remember, you are not alone.

You have loads of positive energy here, and we are all here for you any time ..

Let your son help you..It will be good for him too, and even though we Moms like to be the brave one, please allow yourself to be "taken care of" too..

Do go to the forums mentioned. It is so helpful to talk to others who have been there before you..

When we had our humongous medical traumas with our first child, we never met another family who had dealt with what we were going through, and it was such a lonely feeling..

Reach out for othere.... they are there waiting for your questions..

I'm so sorry to hear about your breast cancer. My mother in law is a 2 time survivor and I know how difficult it can be on you, your friends, and family. There is hope! My MIL was also stage 2 and they removed her breast and nodes. She is now cancer free for the last 8 years. Keep your chin up, hope is the best medicine out there. You can BEAT this!

And to everyone else, this month is the fundraiser for brest cancer research (if you haven't noticed at all the stores out there!) Please give so that more mothers, sisters, wives and daughters won't face this ever again!

The American Cancer Society has a program called Reach to Recovery, where you can request a one on one with someone that has recovered from the same type cancer, approximate stage. This would be great if you aren't in an area with a Breast Cancer support group.

Edited on Mon Oct-18-04 12:22 AM by flaminbats
I will never forget when my mother had a mammogram. We all spent the night before crying and worrying, but she was brave through all of the visits. Then the mail came, and the results were negative.

If those results had been positive..I would of done anything to fill her place. There is nothing more heartbreaking or painful than to see the person you love in agony.

My prayers go with you, your brother, and your sons. Just keep fighting, and that alone makes life a gift.

71. Wow sorry to hear that
My brother is just finishing up treatment (chemo and radiation) for tongue/lymphnode cancer. He has done well to this point but he has started to loose weight here at the end.

Good luck and let me know if there is any way that I can help.

74. Sending good vibes your way.
Glad you found it... by the way how did you find it? I'm 35 and still not sure if I'm doing my self-exams right.

Hope you are at peace with the changes to come. Wish I knew what else to say...

76. So very sorry, and my prayers are with you.
I also clicked on the link from the other thread you referenced. Wonderful idea to offer free mammograms to women in financial need.

All it takes is a click, no donation (explained at site):

80.  Best of luck to you , Molly
Keep your thoughts positive. Never underestimate the power of your will to live. You can be a survivor, you have to will yourself to fight. You have plenty of reasons right in your own family. Do it for yourself and for them.

I will be sending you positive and healing energy too. My sister is a survivor of cancer. All of us know someone who is a cancer survivor.

Please keep us posted.

Love and Healing
Sonia
