As long as I brought up fashion. Anyone else here shop at Goodwill? |
|
I find great stuff there dresses, pants, purses, belts. I have no problem with shopping there. I set a goal each time I go to get a complete outfit. I'm often complimented on my finds and have no shame admitting where I got them!

I found a Pendleton wool jacket in almost-new condition. I wear it all the time. Lots of good buys on expensive long coats and raincoats that don't change fashion, too.

4. Right Here! In fact we have a thrift shop that has half price days. You |
|
can really get some great bargains. I rarely go to the mall, except for perfume and cosmetics.

Apart from 2 sportcoats that, in retrospect, were a tad tight (but acceptable if I don't advertise the fact), I've gotten some great deals there.
And, as I bought 9 sportcoats that were in virtually new condition - and then considering the cost of them new, I won't whine about the mal-fitting ones. :-)

5. bargains always make clothes better |
|
Shopping at good will and finding a great deal is like scoring a goal. A garment with out a good shopping story is never as cool as the outfit you put together by stalking ross or goodwill or estate sales until you found a deal.
The best good will story I have is a full length camel hair coat for $2.50.

and she found some really nice winter clothes for me and paid only $10.00 for an assortment 20 sweaters and long-sleeved shirts.

None in this area, but up in Bangor, ME, it was great -- amazing how much L.L. Bean stuff showed up up there.
Edit: To clarify, we still shop in thrift stores, just not "Goodwill"

People in Maine know what day is Bean's donate day. They line up in front of Goodwill before it opens. I've gotten some of my favorite sweaters there. Also great deals on silk unders---warm for the winter!

i shop at thrift stores and get designer, darling. Nothing but the best!
I scored a white and gold Givenchy couture evening suit, a Chanel jacket, Chanel evening pantsuit are my biggest prizes. Scored some St. John's as well. I've snatched up an Icelandic wool sweater-jacket and a llama/wool coat as well.
I'm getting the "feel" for running through the racks. Use your hands, dear and feel the clothes. You'll go much faster. Good clothes feel better than cheap ones.
I know I'm bragging... I'm being shameless.

13. I don't shop anywhere except thrift stores. |
|
Why pay full price at a mall or department store when you can get name-brand clothes in like new (or sometimes brand-new with the department store price tag still attached) condition for much less?

me and a girlfriend used to go thrift shopping for vintage clothes from the 50's and 60's. this was before it caught on, so we found TONS of good stuff, beaded sweaters, poodle skirts, things like that. it was so much fun!

16. Without thrift shops I'd be naked |
|
My wife bought me a new pair of Dockers last christmas, and new pants are nice, but I told her if she wants to buy me pants to take what she gave for the new pair and buy me five pair of used. I make an exception for underwear and socks, though they do sell them.

Someone goes through the donations and the "good stuff" apparently goes to their eBay site. Been going on for years and no amount of complaints gets any results, so I assume it's someone pretty high up over there. The honest Goodwills are a long drive for me, although I do check in if I happen to be in the area, and I've had some great finds. Because I'm petite, if the donations are actually put out on the floor, it's easy for me to find tons of stuff that has never been worn -- not sure why this is, I think people get "too small" stuff for gifts and are too shy to return them, because after-Christmas can be really good for me to hit the thrift stores.

20. Goodwill has an auction site now so a lot of their stuff is going on |
|
sale via internet auction. In the old days you could find great collectible stuff. Those days are gone. They are even auctioning better clothing. Right now the best place to buy clothing is estate sales. They tend to mark collectibles up but think the clothing isn't worth that much.

It's like rummaging through people's closets. I hate to shop normally, partly because it annoys me how much money stores want for their stuff. I find all kinds of good stuff at Goodwill and other thrift stores - I buy all my work clothes there.
