Saw Dennis Kucinich yesterday... |
|
He was campaigning in the Northwest, for Kerry now, of course.
For anyone who hasn't had a chance to see him in person, let me tell you, he is truly a beautiful person, impish in a way, sensitive, and extremely charismatic.
As a rallier, he has so much energy, enthusiasm and hope. It was truly inspiring to hear him get worked up.
What i will remember most is shaking his hand and thanking him, exchanging a few words; as i was walking away he put his hand on my shoulder and said "remember, focus!" I was surprised by this warm gesture, i just grinned and said "absolutely!"
yet it was a perfect message for me, as i am often full of ideas/plans, and yet, not often very focused on one...
Anyway, if you ever get a chance to see this extraordinary person and progressive politician live, please do, you won't regret it.

2. I've met him a couple times-- most recently in September |
|
...and he is simply an amazing human being. He will make a great president someday, too, once the party gets over its fear of alienating big business.
He was here in MN in September, campaigning for Kerry, at a party for past DK supporters/nat'l delegates in the state. He spoke eloquently on why it's important for his past supporters to back Kerry this year, even when we disagree with him on the issues.
He was also not afraid to say that he didn't support Kerry on many issues, but at the same time Kerry was the best chance we have for real progressive change in this country, and we need to take a long-term approach to making this nation better.
I also gave another $100 to help get rid of his campaign debt. IIRC he's got around $100k left to pay off-- THAT'S ALL! He always ran his campaign with integrity (on a shoestring with not much debt), so I figured it was the least I could do.
Keep an eye on Dennis. Regardless of Nov 2, he'll be a big voice in the future of this party.

3. I hear he's considering running for senate or governor out there in Ohio |
|
I like that idea, no offense to those who want him in Kerry's cabinet. Telling you again, Kerry and him were always my two favorites, it's hard to believe I know at glance but I think after Kucinich, Kerry is the best nominee we could have had of the nine.

13. I hope not, and here's why: |
|
He can probably hang on to his seat in Congress for as long as he wants it. In the presidential primaries, he took 50% of his district and 30% of Cuyahoga County (we fucking LOVE the guy here). Statewide, he won't have nearly those kinds of numbers - downstate Republicans control Ohio to a ridiculous degree. So Dems are a pretty hopeless lot in statewide races. If he leaves congress to run for Senate or Governor in Ohio, he'll likely wind up with no office at all, and that adds up to one less progressive in Washington.

7. Dennis Kucinich is the only politician who ever brought tears to my eyes |
|
I never thought I'd hear a politician from one of the major parties articulating an idealistic yet coherent and workable vision to meet this country's real needs.
I hope that this venture into national politics was only his first effort, not his last.
