I know nice bigots.
Just because they are bigoted on one issue doesn't mean that they are mean, ya know.

Many of them have false airs of elitism, but they can be nice sometimes.

;-)

2. me too!
I know nice bigots who are kind to those like them. Some have false pretenses of persecution, but overall, can be nice and thoughtful!

;)

Really. I agree, Pithlet
the 'bigot' thing precludes the 'nice' thing. I think they're mutually exclusive

4. A few months back...
...I came across a family, stranded when their minivan broke down. Father, mother, two kids. They looked pretty bad off, and I stopped to see if they were okay, since their van was RIGHT in the middle of the road, lights flashing. They told me they'd called a tow truck, but were still in a bind because the truck would only take two passengers max.

I asked them where they were going, and it turned out to be only a few miles away from where I live. I offered a lift. The mother accepted, and brought the baby (the six year old was looking forward to the tow truck ride).

Turned out these were Christian missionaries, up for a family vacation at a retreat center. One I'd driven by any number of times, not really noticing.

It was funny though, the conversation I had with the mother, a very nice lady, really. I'm sure I personified everything she abhorred.

See, I'm a bisexual woman, married to a lesbian.

And I'm Wiccan.

Both of these things came up because we were chatting about this and that, and I told her that I held the 'Golden Rule' as the highest of any religious teachings. Only it's my religion's version. I further told her how I tried to make "paying it forward" a part of my life.

I got her to where she was going, even helped carry the baby seat into the cabin. I could tell though that I wasn't at all what she expected from a "lesbian heathen".

I imagine she and her husband had some interesting conversations after that... but who knows for sure.

6. Regardless...
You did a wonderful thing! Perhaps you opened their eyes (assuming they were not already opened to the kindness in others) and if not, you still helped those in need! You are a good person!

Brightest Blessings!

5. Well my father and mother said you had to marry your own kind.
I always felt that was off the mark but as I grew up I saw what they meant. If two people did not think in the same vane things did not work. Both had to have the same aim. Is that being a bigot? When I was young I thought it was but in old age I think life works like that.I do not think this has a thing to do with where you come from or how you look. It is an inner thing. I also like people who think different and that their aims are not the same. It is just living with them that is hard.

7. Chris Rock said the same thing!
He said: "You have to be into the same thing as your spouse. If you are a born-again and your husband is a crackhead, it ain't gonna work! What are you doing? I am going to church. I am gonna hit the pipe! It will never work!! But, two crackheads can stay together FOREVER!" (para-phrased)

:)

8. Somehow, izzie, I doubt that your folks were

referring to gay marriages.

But it certainly makes sense.

9. I think it just seems elitist myself.
Everywhere you look people are standing up for their own team. Clark, Dean, Chevrolets, Fords, Democrats, Greens, Red Sox, Yankees, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Atheists, Wiccans, Lutherans, dog owners, and kitten fanciers (I think I've used my comma quota for the month {random thought}). Everyone is a fan of a particular group for their own reasons. Because of those reasons, they brag about them. it doesn't necessarily imply that they are elitist (to me), just that they are proud of their own team. I'm talking about low-level bigotry, of course. I don't know if I'd apply the same feeling toward higher level bigotry such as white supremacists.

10. the game is good but the teams suck
the bigots i've met just haven't met someone from the other team to realize how much they have in common. They find comfort in thier own team. Baseball, race religion and sexual preferances will start start wacking each other out when they forget that it's the game we love. Greed creates need.
