is how JS always refutes that TDS is a "real" news show. He insists he's a comedian, not a journalist.
But Tucker Carlson (and to a lesser extent, Paul Begala) just didn't seem to get it that Jon has a COMEDY show, and they have a NEWS show, and the standards are, in fact, very different for the two!
Jon said it right: When news shows look to Comedy Central for ethics standards, we're all in big trouble!

that there show is theater, not news. And by Begala and Carlson continuing their line of questioning, they strengthen Stewart's premise. Carlson said, "Be Funny."
"I'm not going to be your monkey," replied Stewart.
I thought that was awesome!
I thought he came off very well. Intelligent, without being arrogant. Nice work, Jon. :yourock:

That was my favorite part. And I think it was after that that everyone in the studio started to realize that John Stewart wasn't joking.

10. I was sooo impressed by John when he was on Charlie Rose |
|
a few weeks ago. He is so smart, and so articulate. And very concerned about things. He is funny, but there is a really good heart and brain underlying that. I like that a lot. It was sad that no one on that show was able to hear what he was saying.

he was older. I don't really care about the bow tie, it's an affectation.. but the lack of thought is a problem.

17. Man, TDS was funny tonight! |
|
Edited on Tue Oct-19-04 12:58 AM by TXlib
He talked about his appearance on Crossfire, and how Carlson commented about how he wasn't funny. JS's response: "Well, Monday, I'll be funny again, and you'll still suck!"
The spanking just kept going on and on.
The moment of Zen was a moment from (I think) Crossfire, with Bob Novak that not only was Stewart not funny, but he was utterly uninformed, and the other guy (Carville, I think) replying that he was pretty funny, but he was an arrogant ass.
It's one's opinion whether Stewart is funny ort not, but given that TDS is political/current events humor, one must be well-informed to write it, so Novak (IMHO) came off as just an angry, bitter man, eviscerated repeatedly by JS and TDS, sniping randomly with no merit to it.

18. The 'other guy' was James Carville |
|
I think his "but come tomorrow, I'll be funny again" sounded a lot like Churchill's famous line:
<paraphrased> "Sir, you're drunk." "Yes, and you're ugly. But in the morning, I'll be sober."

Very uncool of Carville to diss Jon.
It might not have been pleasant to be given the red-ass by Jon Stewart -- but it didn't have to be that way. He raised some excellent points, and if they were really thoughtful people, they would have been ready for it and it would have been fascinating and been a major breakthrough on tv -- the revolution would have been indeed televised! But sadly, their responses have revealed them all to be a bunch of pretentious posers doing it for a paycheck....
Carlson was called a "dick," and Novak is famously referred to as "Doucebag of Freedom" -- so one can excuse them -- kinda -- for being bitchy and touchy about being called on this stuff -- but Carville was WAY out of line here.
I agree with Jon's point in arguing with Begala that people really "believe" in what they espouse -- no they don't, and yes, they know they are lying.
As is tradition, it is only the court jester that really understands what the hell is going on.

22. Thanks, I finally got to see what I've been hearing so much about... |
|
...and Stewart was absolutely right.
Crossfire and the vast majority of the rest of the media are guilty of talking down to their audiences in an attempt to dumb down the electorate.
We don't get news, we just get the "spin" of what the right and left want us to think. It shows when so many ordinary people try to talk about issues and they can't; all they can do is parrot "talking points."
It shows when we see how news is done in foreign countries, and how frivolous and uninformative our own in this country is. Too many people are "pundits" (i.e., lazy hacks who excrete their bias into the brains of those who share it and take comfort in having their prejudices reaffirmed) and not enough are actual "journalists" (investigators who want to find out what is really going on, regardless of whether or not it makes others feel comfortable or threatened).
The "outrage" of the Carlsons, Novaks, et al is just the fear and anger of the confidence man over someone who sees through them and isn't keeping it to himself. The only bad part of John Stewart's exchange was that there aren't enough people like him willing to take this stand.
