Poll question: So, is there something in the air this year, relationship-wise?
I've had more than one person tell me that divorce, and break-ups of long-term relationships, seem to be going around in 2004. I'm wondering if there is some kind of pattern here.

So -- which best describes your situation?

1. It's not been rocky, but a little pebbly, still, it's good now.
And it's staying that way for the foreseeable future.

7. Thanks.
It's very recent, and I am hurting more than I've ever hurt before. I didn't think you could still hurt this much at my age.

6. The last relationship I was in ended
in mid-January, but it REALLY ended in early December; I just didn't wan't to be that asshole who dumped someone right on top of the Holidays, so I waited until a week and a half after New Year's to lower the boom. So, two questions: how should I vote in the poll, and does waiting make me just as much of an asshole as dumping someone right before the Holidays?

10. I think you're a 2003-er
Either answer "single" or "short-term," depending on which is more accurate.

Plenty of people wait until after the holidays, so that in and of itself wasn't assholish.

HOWEVER -- did you continue to make plans for life beyond the holidays? Telling your ex that, sure, you'll be able to get time off for Valentines Day, knowing full well you wouldn't be spending it with them? (I should differentiate "knowing full well" from "going back and forth" as well. The former's kind of sucky; the latter is understandable.)

11. Dude. You had to buy presents.
That doesn't make you an asshole, that makes you a tool. ;)

14. She got me WAY better presents than I got her.
That probably explains my quasi-Jewish guilt over the whole thing. That and I'm Jewish.

23. Jewish guilt takes NOTHING to trigger.
That's why it's the most advanced control weapon known to humanity.

8. I wonder.
There's a lot on her and my daughter has told me about many of her friends' parents breaking up this year (most of us married for 13-15 years-- seems to be a few of us on DU as well). I don't know. Maybe those of us who are going through it just notice it more.

For me it would have to have been in the air for the past four years or so.

I have not been in a relationship since Dec. 1989...

And it does not look like I will ever be in another one.

20. Same for me,
FarLeftRage :( I give up trying to find a nice, single, lefty man. There always seems to be some type of 'stumbling block' in the way - i.e. this person won't date people he works with, or that person is already spoken for, etc.

18. My Chinese friend blames the Year of the Monkey
She says it's a time of great upheaval. Looking at my own life and the lives of other people I know, I'd say she isn't far off base.

19. You know, there could be something to it.
Or maybe just, with everything going on in the world, people are stressed out and their relationships suffer...
