Being a Red Sox fan must be a form of mental illness |
|
After Saturday's game I had sunk into an all to familiar state of despondent acceptance. When I got up Sunday I looked at my ever worn Sox cap, shook my head and turned to the closet. I rummaged around the back of my closet and dug out an old college cap to wear. Sunday night I wasn't even going to listen to the game but turned it on, more out of habit than anything else. I was working on other things and soon enough the yanks are up 2-0. Then, wonder of wonders, the Sox tie it up. Inspite of myself I start to get excited. I turn up the radio. Of course the yanks tie it up and then pull ahead...but...then the sox tie it up and then of course David Ortiz steps to the plate. At 1:30 AM I'm jumping about my living room like an idiot.
This morning after I awake I once again look at my well worn and faded Sox cap. Un uh, no way...on goes the college cap again. I begin to entertain delusional fantasies of winning four straight against the hated Yankees and going to the World Series. Now, here we are. Again. All tied up in extra innings. I can't stand it anymore. Is there a cure for my madness? Do I even want to be cured? Can anyone out there help me? Please I'm begging you!

7. I've been suffering this "mental illness" for as long as I remember |
|
It will be worth it one year! This could be the one. Unlikely, but I'm a still a believer. One game at a time...
And Ortiz is coming up this inning. :D

...but I thought I'd drop in to wonder aloud how much longer I might have expected to live if not for the Sox. I have a feeling we're talking ten years, easy. :eyes: One more time, Ooooooorrrtiiiiizzzz! :bounce:

86 years old, one heart attack, and I just know he's sitting there spitting and cursing at the TV right now.

12. My grandfather got to see them win in 1918. |
|
The whole family's gone 0-fer since. My Dad only got to live through the barren years, although it might be considered lucky for a Sox fan to have died B.B. (Before Buckner). Now I can't look away no matter how tense it gets because I'll have to tell Dad what it was like some day. (Can hardly wait to tell him about the Pats! :D)
