8. I'm a woman and I don't see anything wrong

with saying someone is attractive or not. I personally have quite a thing for John Kerry, and I know a girl in College Dems who is obsessed with John Edwards. Am I voting for him because I think he's a good looking man? No, I'd vote for him even if he were the ugliest man on the planet. But saying someone is handsome/beautiful, or asking who you personally find more attractive, is not offensive. If someone said I was hot, I'd be flattered, not outraged.

You're at work and do an outstanding job. I don't talk about that but ask if you're sexier than the woman in the office next to you. If you're on a date or at a party, sure I'd be flattered. Do we really need to discuss the sexual attractiveness of our candidates' daughters.

19. Admiring someone's attractiveness and their intelligence

doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. I don't think anyone here has reduced Alexandra or Vanessa Kerry or Cate Edwards to nothing more than "hot women." Their physical appearance is a facet of who they are; it is a facet of who everyone is. The first thing you notice about someone you've never seen before is their appearance, and you make note of it. If you think someone is attractive, there is no shame in admitting that. I don't find it degrading at all. No one is acting like these women cannot be judged or admired for their intellect or strength; I fail to see how this thread is anything but complimentary to them. Not only are they smart and strong, but they are beautiful as well. Admiring physical beauty is not a sexist thing, and yes, if I were a politician or a "professional" woman, I would take it as a compliment if someone said, "not only is she brilliant and candid, but she's gorgeous, too!" That's certainly what I think when I see a man I admire who also happens to be very good-looking.
