Is anyone else sick of god damn PG-13 movies?
It seems like every single fucking movie that comes out now is PG-13. I heard a few years ago about new restrictions on R-rated movies and how they couldn't advertise them at the same times they used to, etc. And now it seems like EVERYTHING is being watered down to make more money--to get those kids buying tickets. Even HORROR movies are rated PG-13 now! Take a look at your local marquee or Blockbuster and you might see these movies:

The Forgotten: Rated PG-13
Friday Night Lights: Rated PG-13
Ladder 49: Rated PG-13
Mr. 3000: Rated PG-13
Shall We Dance?: Rated PG-13
Cellular: Rated PG-13
Taxi: Rated PG-13
Wimbledon: Rated PG-13
The Grudge: Rated PG-13
Alien vs. Predator: Rated PG-13
I, Robot: Rated PG-13
The Village: Rated PG-13
The Bourne Supremacy: Rated PG-13
White Chicks: Rated PG-13

Does it piss anyone else off that American movies are largely being castrated?

1. What's wrong with PG-13?
I prefer movies that I'm comfortable watching with my children.

2. That sums up my thoughts.
Imagine if saving private ryan was watered down for a PG 13 rating. Even if you thought it sucked anyway, I am sure you can agree that it sucked MORE. (personally, I like it).

A good film is good regardless of its rating.

4. I'll second that emotion.
All these cop movies where no one says "fuck"; love stories where no one has sex and horror movies where no one dies. Every movie doesn't have to be violent, sexy or salty-tongued, of course, but it would be nice if the writers and directors didn't feel hemmed in by economics and puritanical sensibilities.

11. Yeah, it just seems to me like almost EVERYTHING is for kids these days...
...like kids are the center of the universe because parents spend lots of money on them, so therefore the economy is largely centered around them. We can't just have two categories: kid stuff and adult stuff. No, we have to make virtually everything "kid safe." Then the movies that aren't kid safe don't make money, and thus there are less... and less... and less of them.

19. I agree 1000000%
My husband and I are childless.

we are adults.

Sometimes, I want to see a movie that isn't filled with "Shucks" "Darn" and "Ay-Hole". I want to hear some goddammed fucking cursing once in a while.

But nooooo. 80% of movies are marketed to adults AND their 13 year old children.

Even Cable is so watered down these days. Everything is "kid friendly"---it makes me sick.

Yes, not everything is appropriate for children. That is why the TV has an on-off switch. That is why parents should watch tv WITH their children instead of forcing the rest of the TV population to deal with watered-down tripe so that poor little Johnny won't hear beavis say "Fire" and run off and start a fire.

A bar my husband and I used to go to started having "kids nights" like two or three times a week. Aw how cute. Nothing better to get drunk to than having a bar full of screaming 5 year olds hogging up the juke box and playing fucking Hillary Duff songs 8x's in a row (the SAME song....over and over and over again).

Oh wait! I forgot! On "Kids Night", you're not allowed to drink....IN THE BAR....and this isn't a restaurant. It's a BAR. THey had kids' night I guess because all the lazy schleps were neglecting their families and drowning their sorrows in a pint, so hey! Bring the wifey, hubby, and kiddies along while everyone who doesn't know about Kids Night (myself included) can get nice and gussied up and round up a few friends for a pitcher or seven only to find out...gee...sorry no place to sit because of the Lyttle Tykes play center that's been set up on the bandstand and whops! No alkie for the little tots.

Sorry. I'm just perturbed today (not about kids), but I agree with you in the child-centeredness of our society. Kids are great (not for me). They're fun to be around (under certain, limited situations for me), but the world does not, and should not revolve around kids. There needs to be adult-only things----R rated movies and no kids-night at the Dirty Ashtray for one.

Oh! Oh! My hubby just reminded me of this----a few years ago I went to Victoria's Secret to get some bra's. I needed to be fitted, though, so I asked the lady for a fitting. SHe said "a fitting for what?" and I said "A bra" and she whispered "There's a little girl with her mom here. I don't think a fitting would be appropriate right now"

??????

What
the
fuck

It's not like I was gonna pull out the boobies and ask the saleslady to give me a nipple lick. I just had to have a fitting (which is done OVER the clothes). I guess it was okay for LIttle Miss Princess to walk around crotchless undies and satin thongs but JESUS GOD OF ALL THINGS SWEET, DON'T LET OUR BABY SEE A TAPE MEASURE ACROSS A CHEST...she may...she might...she WILL become a prostitute and start going out giving bra-sizings for COMPLETE STRANGERS

oh the humanity.

:eyes:

5. The American movie companies . . .
. . . aren't in the business of making good movies. They're in the business of making money. Didn't you know that? If they thought they could make more money making explicit XXX films, that's mostly what they would make. Deal with it.

7. What I found worse: Foreign movies almost always are rated: R
Even movies with a "6" or even "all ages" rating over here.
OK, age ratings vary a lot across Europe too, but the trend is clear.

8. Different Movies for Different Audiences
Yes, I sometimes wish movies were less sanitized. But I sometimes wish they were MORE sanitized. My daughter went to see "Love, Actually" last Christmas -- she was 13. (She was at her mothers that week.) It was rated R and a lot of R movies these days are not too bad, like the Matrix. But "Love, Actually" had repeated scenes of two pornstars doing it on a movie set. Pretty explicit. Don't know how it got an R rating. It didn't hurt her, but I would rather not have had her see that quite yet.

On the other hand, I really wish that "Eyes Wide Shut" had been released with the explicit orgy scenes that had to be removed. They were integral to the effect of the movie and it would have been much stronger in my opinion.

Maybe there should be multiple versions for some movies.

And I am sick of the "Drama" section at Blockbuster being full of nothing but "feelgood" PG-13 movies and R rated soft porn.

Man, screw PG-13. Weren't Predator AND Alien both rated R??
Now all of a sudden, when they meet, they're LESS violent?
???????????????
Ridiculous.

But, as others have said, it's just a symptom of today's movies largely sucking. As is the sequel craze, and the comic book film craze, etc.

Actually, in that vein, I'm fairly certainly Predator v. Alien sucks.

18. I don't really enjoy violence
I actually get bored by long fight scenes and disguested by other stuff. If its a war movie or something, of course, I expect violence but in some movies the violence is ovedone with no other purpose to appeal to people who like that sort of thing. If I want to see sex, I'll rent a porn movie. That is often overdone for the same reason. Yes, some movies work better as R movies, but some work better as PG 13 or less with the R violence or sex just being filler.

21. Fuck the MPAA.
The whole thing is bullshit and has to go. They're why we've got all this PG-13 bullshit, and I don't just mean the rating itself, but the watering down of movies.

And they're getting more conservative. They're giving harsher ratings to "doggiestyle" and "woman on top" positions than good old, male-dominate, christian missionary position. How fucking ridiculous is that?

I say to hell with the ratings boards and if you parents don't want your kids seeing naughty bits then get off your lazy asses and check out the plot synopsis before you go see the film. Quit ruining it for the rest of us.

22. pg-13 movies are hardly watered down. theyre incredibly stupid but
they arent watered down. the non stop schtick of lewd and crude and violence goes on, even if its rated pg-13 and not r (there isnt that much difference in american movies anyway, despite the rating)

if movies were made to be intelligent or even entertaining, thats one thing but they are cranked out like everything else just to make cheap and quick money.
and it shows

23. I strongly disagree
They are most certainly watered down. Name a recent PG-13 movie that has full frontal male or female nudity.
